Denis Leary was never a nice guy. He grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, surrounded by a family of Irish immigrants who didn't hand out compliments. Humor helped him survive the bars of Boston, and there he forged the image of a cynic chained to a cigarette who spat uncomfortable truths at a suicidal speed.
Provocation was his best product.
In 1993 he released the special No Cure for Cancer. It was a fist slammed on the table of American comedy, mixing social rage with magnetic swagger. Many accused him of copying Bill Hicks' tone and themes, but Leary chose to ignore the noise and move straight into film.
In 1994 he starred in The Ref, playing a thief who ends up acting as marriage counselor for an insufferable couple. Throughout the nineties he racked up supporting roles in films such as Demolition Man and Small Soldiers. He was the perfect face for the tough guy with a quick comeback for everything.
The Worcester warehouse fire in 1999 killed six firefighters, including his cousin. That trauma drastically changed his personal and professional path. He founded the Leary Firefighters Foundation and began developing the series that would earn him definitive respect from the critics.
In 2004 he premiered Rescue Me on FX. Over seven seasons he played Tommy Gavin. That self-destructive alcoholic firefighter who talked with ghosts moved beyond caricature to portray post-traumatic stress after the 11 of September.
It was his most honest work.
While struggling on the small screen, he voiced Diego in the Ice Age franchise. The first installment, released in 2002, grossed more than $380 million and gave him a healthy bank account. That financial freedom allowed him to be much more selective with his later projects.
He appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man as Captain Stacy in 2012. He briefly returned for the 2014 sequel, bringing a sobriety the franchise needed. But his main interest remained in producing and in scripts with a sharp, acid edge.
In 2015 he tried to revive the spirit of rock with Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. The series ran for two seasons and allowed him to write songs and surround himself with guitars. Music was always his other great, unsecret passion.
And his commitment to prestige television continued.
In 2022 he joined Dick Wolf's universe in Law & Order: Organized Crime. His role as Frank Donnelly over eight episodes revived that dangerous energy of someone who pulls the strings from the shadows. It proved his physical presence still worked without relying on the yelling of his stand-up days.
Leary lives on a farm in Connecticut with his wife, writer Ann Lembeck. In 2024 his foundation surpassed $12 million in direct donations for equipment for firehouses in New York and Boston. The budget for his latest Fox production, Animal Control, closed with a 15% cost reduction compared to the previous season.
