The Boy Who Refused to Become a Has-Been

Nathan Kress started working before he had clear memories of his childhood. By age three he was already posing for clothing catalogs in California, and shortly after he was lending his voice to supporting characters in productions such as Babe: Pig in the City (1998). That early start was not a family whim but a natural path for a kid who understood the rhythms of a shoot better than the rules of school.

After a brief break to try being a normal student, he returned to auditions at age eleven. He took part in sketch shows and small roles in national TV series, but the real change came in 2007. Nickelodeon was looking for a technical, somewhat clumsy type to star alongside Miranda Cosgrove in a series about the internet. Kress landed the role of Freddie Benson and spent six years glued to a prop video camera while his face ended up on teen folders across half the world.

The series drew audiences of more than 11 million viewers for its most-watched episodes. But teen success often becomes a cage that stifles adult careers if it isn't managed with a cool head.

Massive success arrived with a video camera in hand.

The Director's Chair as a Refuge

When iCarly ended in 2012, many expected Kress to go after B-movies or teen romantic comedies. Instead of fighting for leading-man roles that didn't quite suit his look, he chose to step back. In 2014 he began directing episodes of Henry Danger and Game Shakers. He found that controlling a scene's rhythm from the monitor gave him a stability that acting had denied him at the time.

That's how he avoided the decline that so often hits child stars. Because the entertainment business rewards technical skill as much as charisma. Kress directed 11 episodes of various Nickelodeon productions before turning twenty-five. This side of his career gave him an insider's grasp of production from an angle few actors of his generation have.

In 2014, he also had a standout role in the disaster film Into the Storm. It was an attempt to break into the big screen on a budget of $50 million. The movie did well at the box office but did not open the doors to major Hollywood franchises. So he went back to television and voice work for animated projects such as Star Wars Rebels.

No one expected the phenomenon of his childhood to return so soon.

The Return to the Seattle Servers

Paramount+ decided to revive the brand in 2021 with a more mature version of the original series. Kress returned to play Freddie Benson, but this time with far greater creative control. He handled production and directed several key episodes across the three seasons this revival lasted. The show's tone shifted to appeal to an audience that no longer wanted childish jokes but stories about adult life.

But the streaming industry is ruthless about production costs. The series was abruptly canceled in October 2023, leaving several storylines open and fans without a proper ending. Kress handled the end of this chapter with the detachment of someone who has spent thirty years in the industry and knows that contracts depend on algorithms, not nostalgia.

And the bet on diversification paid off.

Since 2019, he has balanced his visual projects with recording Radio Active Dads. It's a podcast where he explores fatherhood alongside his former castmate Brett Davern. The actor closed out 2023 focused on this audio format and on his family life in California. His current filmography includes more credits as a director and voice actor than as the lead in traditional mainstream films.
