Penelope Wilton isn't an actress who makes big headlines or scandals in the tabloid press. She was born in Scarborough in 1946 and grew up surrounded by scripts and dressing rooms. Her uncles were actors Bill and Gerard Glossop, so acting came naturally to her.
She made her professional debut in 1969 at the Nottingham Playhouse. She spent her early years perfecting her accent and stage presence on London's most demanding stages. By 1971, she was already working under Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic.
The theater is her true home.
During the 1970s, she focused on the classics. She played Cordelia in King Lear and Masha in Three Sisters. She won the London Critics' Circle award in 1981 for her role in Man and Superman by George Bernard Shaw.
That recognition opened the doors of national television for her. In 1984, she starred in the sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles. It aired until 1989 and was a ratings hit on the BBC.
But her move into international film took a while. In 2005, she worked with Woody Allen in Match Point, playing Eleanor Hewett. It was a quick shoot on location in London and Buckinghamshire.
Wilton prefers restraint to showiness.
In 2010, she accepted the role that would change her public image outside England. She joined the cast of Downton Abbey to play Isobel Crawley. She was 64 years old when the series began airing on ITV.
Her verbal sparring with Maggie Smith became the show's secondary storyline engine. The series earned fifteen Emmy Awards over its six seasons. Yet she always kept a low profile at promotional events.
And her bet on sobriety paid off.
In 2012, she appeared in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The film grossed 136 million dollars worldwide on a modest budget. She played Jean Ainslie, a bitter character that contrasted with her usual image.
In 2019, she joined the cast of After Life, Ricky Gervais's Netflix series. She played Anne, the woman who counsels the main character at the cemetery. She filmed a total of 18 episodes between 2019 and 2022.
In 2023, she premiered the feature film The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. The movie was shot in chronological order to help the actors handle the emotional weight of the story. The screenplay was an adaptation of Rachel Joyce's novel.
That same year she appeared in the miniseries Murder is Easy, playing Lavinia Pinkerton. Filming took place in Scotland during the summer of 2023. The production featured costume design that faithfully recreated the fashion of 1954.
