Julian Fellowes was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1949. For decades he worked as a character actor in British productions that almost no one remembers. He was fifty when director Robert Altman asked him to write a screenplay about a murder at an English country house.
That assignment was Gosford Park.
In 2002 he won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and the phone didn't stop ringing. But Fellowes was no newcomer to the aristocracy he depicted in his writing. He knew the codes of etiquette and the hierarchies of domestic service because they were part of his own family tree.
Before writing a single line, he usually researches the exact silverware of the period. He believes drama lies in the small details of human behavior. That's why his characters often suffer more from an ill-timed comment at the dinner table than from a financial tragedy.
British television shifted gears in 2010 with the premiere of Downton Abbey. Fellowes designed a structure where the plot moved forward through gala dinners and inheritance crises. He wasn't seeking social revolution but aesthetic order.
Many critics dismissed the series as an exercise in conservative nostalgia. Viewers didn't care. The series reached audiences of 120 million people worldwide and spawned two movies released in 2019 and 2022.
And the sets were real.
He wrote the novel Belgravia in 2016 and personally adapted it for television in 2020. He rarely hands over control of his stories. He prefers to handle the dialogue himself, because he knows that the rhythm of a sentence reveals the social standing of the person speaking it.
In 2022 he premiered The Gilded Age on HBO. He carried his obsession with social class over to 1880s New York, pitting the old money of traditional families against the industrial nouveau riche who were building mansions in Manhattan.
But the style remained purely British.
The production of the second season in 2023 confirmed that American audiences accepted his take on American history. Fellowes applies the same formula of domestic conflict and personal ambition regardless of the continent. His working method ignores modern trends in screenwriting in favor of classic melodrama.
Julian Fellowes entered the House of Lords in 2011 as Baron Fellowes of West Stafford. He balances his legislative work with screenwriting from his country home in Dorset. His contract with Universal International Studios guarantees the production of new period dramas until the end of the decade.
