Jonny Lee Miller was born with a script under his arm. His grandfather was Bernard Lee, the actor who played the first M in the James Bond franchise, but young Jonny preferred the mud of 1990s London. He left school at sixteen to chase supporting roles on British television.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1995, he shot Hackers and his life changed for reasons that had nothing to do with the box office. There he met Angelina Jolie. They married shortly after in a wedding where she wore the actor's name written in blood on her white shirt. It was a brief but noisy union that put him on the press's radar before the film critics' radar.
But the real breakthrough came with a syringe and a put-on accent.
Danny Boyle landed the role of Sick Boy in Trainspotting in 1996. Miller was the only Englishman in the main cast and spent weeks in the Glasgow underworld polishing his accent. He delivered such an authentic performance that Scottish audiences took years to believe the actor was actually from Kingston upon Thames.
The film cost barely two million pounds and grossed more than seventy million worldwide.
Unlike many of his generation's peers, Miller always returned to the stage. In 2011, he starred in Frankenstein at the National Theatre under Boyle's direction. He swapped the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature every night with Benedict Cumberbatch. That experiment earned him the Olivier Award for theater.
That connection with Cumberbatch became strange a year later.
In 2012, CBS offered him the role of Sherlock Holmes in the series Elementary. The comparison with the British version was inevitable, and many critics predicted failure due to the character's oversaturation on screen. Miller kept up the pace for seven seasons and 154 episodes in total. He earned about $100,000 per episode in the final stages of production.
His Holmes was a recovering addict who used boxing and tattoos as an anchor to reality. It was a job that demanded physical endurance more than intellectual showmanship.
Because Miller doesn't understand acting without the sweat.
Away from the spotlight, his life revolves around asphalt and mountains. He is a regular ultramarathon runner and has completed hundred-mile races in under twenty-four hours. That spartan discipline is reflected in his more mature professional choices, where he avoids media noise.
In 2022, he took on the challenge of playing John Major in the fifth season of The Crown. Audiences expected a caricature of the Conservative prime minister, but Miller opted for absolute restraint. He wasn't after easy applause but technical precision, portraying a gray civil servant in a system that was falling apart.
In 2024, he took part in the stage production A Mirror in London's West End. The show explored censorship and art under authoritarian regimes within a play-within-a-play structure. Performances at the Trafalgar Theatre carried a sold-out sign for the entire run.
The play closed its run with net box office receipts of over two million pounds after its final performance in April 2024.
