Genesis Rodriguez was born in Miami in 1987 and grew up under her father's media shadow. But she decided her path would not go through music. She started in the telenovela circuit at Telemundo with Prisionera in 2004. That shoot taught her the discipline of filming twenty scenes a day with no margin for error.
By seventeen she was already a familiar face in Hispanic households across the United States. She appeared in Dame chocolate and Doña Bárbara between 2007 and 2009. But the Latin market soon felt too small for her.
Spanish-language television was too comfortable a refuge.
She moved to Los Angeles in 2010 with the intention of starting from scratch. She didn't want her last name to be the only engine of her career. So she enrolled in acting classes to polish her accent and learn the rhythms of American film.
In 2012 she landed her first major role in Hours. She played Angie and shared the screen with Sam Worthington. The film had a budget of $42 million and served as her calling card to the major studios.
That same year she shot Casa de mi padre alongside Will Ferrell. It was a sharp parody of the same soap operas that had made her famous years earlier. Rodriguez showed she had a sense of humor and didn't mind poking fun at her own professional origins.
In 2013 she starred in Hours alongside Paul Walker. The shoot was demanding because the plot takes place during Hurricane Katrina. But critics praised her ability to carry the dramatic weight of a low-budget production.
Kevin Smith called her in 2014 to take part in Tusk. It was one of the strangest films of that decade. She played Allison in a body horror setting that had nothing to do with her previous work.
The industry began to see her as an actress capable of moving across genres.
Big Hero 6, she voiced the character Honey Lemon in 2014. The Disney film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. That project grossed 657 million dollars worldwide and gave her an indirect entry into the superhero franchise.
After a few years of smaller projects, she found a foothold in streaming. In 2022 she joined the third season of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. She played Sloane, one of the members of the Sparrow Academy with gravity powers.
Filming took place in Toronto under harsh weather conditions. But the series gave her the global visibility that independent film had denied her in earlier stages.
It wasn't a straight path to the top.
In 2024, her casting in the second season of Lioness was announced. The series, starring Taylor Sheridan for Paramount+, required a shift toward special operations thriller. She shot much of her footage on locations in Texas.
The production contract for this series included twelve-hour workdays on desert locations.
