Daniel Henney grew up in Carson City, a small town in Michigan where being biracial was the exception, not the rule. His mother moved to the United States from Korea as a girl, adopted by a white family. His father had Irish roots. That heritage shaped his look, but it also fueled an ambition that didn't fit in the Midwest.
He started out walking the runway in Hong Kong and Taiwan because the money was good and the travel was constant.
In 2005, he was offered a job in South Korean television. He didn't speak the language and barely knew the culture of his ancestors. But he took on the challenge of joining the series My Lovely Sam Soon. The show became a massive social phenomenon, and Henney became a national celebrity within weeks.
That was a media frenzy that was hard to manage.
He had to study Korean intensively so he wouldn't be just a pretty face on screen. In 2006 he starred in Seducing Mr. Perfect, and in 2007 he shot My Father, where critics began to take him seriously as a dramatic actor. He won Best New Actor at the Blue Dragon Film Awards before deciding it was time to try his luck back home.
Hollywood is always looking for fresh faces that fit the mold of the international action hero. In 2009, he landed the role of Agent Zero in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He shared scenes with Hugh Jackman and saw firsthand how a $150 million production works. That opened the doors of American television wide for him.
But the industry is fickle.
He joined the cast of Three Rivers and later joined the Criminal Minds franchise. He first appeared in the spin-off Beyond Borders in 2016 and then moved to the main series in 2017. There he played Matt Simmons for several seasons. It was steady, well-paid work on one of the most profitable productions on CBS.
Because the actor knew that stability in Los Angeles is a luxury few can afford. During those years he voiced Tadashi Hamada in Big Hero 6, a Disney film that won the Oscar in 2015. The success of the animated film let him stay relevant without having to be physically present at every release of the season.
The turn of the decade brought projects with a different visual style and budgets inflated by streaming platforms. In 2021, he joined the epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time to play Lan Mandragoran. He's a quiet character who requires constant physical training. Filming moved to Prague and meant a multi-year commitment with Amazon.
In 2023, he appeared in the thriller Missing, a film set almost entirely on digital device screens. The budget was just $7 million and it grossed more than $75 million at the global box office. It was a reminder that Henney still has commercial pull beyond procedural TV series.
He still divides his work between two continents.
In 2024, he took part in the Korean comedy-drama Dog Days, shot in Seoul. The production featured an ensemble cast of local stars and focused on интertwined stories about pets. The film's international distribution deal sold for a price above the average for Korean cinema that year.
