Andrea Roth was born in Woodstock, Ontario, a place where the Canadian winter leaves little room for improvisation. Her mother was Dutch and her father was Scottish. That blend of European pragmatism shaped her entry into show business in the late eighties.
In 1988, she landed a small role in the series The Hitchhiker. There were no red carpets or big headlines in the Toronto press. She simply kept stringing together contracts on low-budget local productions, where she learned that the camera doesn't forgive theatrical excess.
Steady work pays the bills.
In 1994, she played Diana Powers in RoboCop: The Series. It was a science fiction production with visual effects that look charmingly dated today but demanded grueling workdays at the time. That role allowed her to make the leap to the United States to try her luck in the Los Angeles market.
But Hollywood can be cruel to actresses who don't fit a specific mold. For years, she alternated brief appearances on TV series with B-movies that barely reached theaters. And despite the lack of major leading roles, she never stopped working.
Everything changed in 2004 when Denis Leary cast her in Rescue Me. Janet Gavin was not the typical long-suffering wife of a New York firefighter. She was a woman with rough edges, alcohol problems, and a toxic relationship that Roth defended for seven seasons in a row.
Nobody expected a drama about firefighters traumatized by the 11 of September to last so long.
In 2007 she looked for a place in mainstream action cinema with War. She worked alongside Jet Li and Jason Statham in a film that performed well at the box office but didn't demand big dramatic displays. Two years later, in 2009, she starred in The Collector. Over time, this horror film became a cult title for fans of visceral cinema.
From 2010 onward, her profile shifted toward maternal roles with a very specific emotional weight. In 2014 she joined the cast of the science fiction miniseries Ascension. And in 2017 she played the mother of one of the leads in 13 Reasons Why for Netflix.
Marvel came knocking on her door in 2018 for the Cloak & Dagger project. She brought Melissa Bowen to life over two full seasons. Her character was an addicted woman trying to rebuild her life in a suffocating New Orleans. The series ended its run in 2019.
There is no trace of the actress in the gossip tabloids.
In 2020, she appeared in several episodes of Suits, playing Samantha Wheeler's mother. It was a one-time return to the legal drama before she focused on more independent projects. Roth prefers the security of a good TV script to the uncertainty of the big screen.
In 2023, she shot the movie Deadly Estate under the direction of Corey Grant. Her filmography now tops eighty titles across a variety of formats and genres. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, producer Todd Biermann, and their daughter.
Filming the fire scenes for Rescue Me often meant wearing fire-resistant protective gear that weighed more than thirty-five pounds.
