Jessalyn Gilsig didn't land in Hollywood by accident. She was born in Montreal in 1971 and trained at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University. That academic foundation explains why she always seems to have complete control of the stage, even when playing characters on the verge of falling apart.
Her first big break came through David E. Kelley on Boston Public in 2000. She played teacher Lauren Davis in a series that tried to dissect the American education system. But network television has its own rules, and her character ended up disappearing from the plot after a couple of seasons.
The actress didn't sit around waiting for a call that never came.
In 2003, she took a supporting role in Nip/Tuck that changed how the industry saw her. Gina Russo was a complex, self-destructive character, radically far from the polish of her early days. Gilsig worked on 17 episodes of the Ryan Murphy series and proved she could keep up with a much darker, more cynical storyline.
Then came 2009 and with it the explosion of Glee. Gilsig took on the role of Terri Schuester, the domestic antagonist that half of television loved to hate. It was a difficult role because it lacked the musical element of the rest of the cast. But she made Terri's neurosis the driving force of the tensest storylines in the first season.
And the gamble paid off.
Because Jessalyn Gilsig understands that an actor isn't always there to be likable to the audience. During the years 2013 and 2015, she moved to the damp landscapes of Vikings to play Siggy Haraldson. In this historical drama, her character went from being a count's wife to a survivor who did laundry to stay close to power. It was a lesson in acting humility that ended with a frozen death on an icy lake.
In 2013, she also decided to explore producing with the independent film Somewhere Slow. It was a small project in which she also starred. She was interested in controlling timelines and understanding how to raise funding from scratch in a saturated market.
Her work on television didn't stop after her Nordic chapter ended. In 2016, she joined the cast of Scandal to replace another actress in the role of Vanessa Moss. It was a common move in the industry, but she brought a different kind of coldness to the episodes she appeared in.
She took on the challenge of Disney+ in 2021 with the series Big Shot. There, she played Holly Barrett, the assistant coach who has to deal with the ego of a male lead played by John Stamos. The series was canceled in 2023 after two seasons due to the platform's budget cuts.
Gilsig lives in Los Angeles and keeps a low profile at the city's social events. In 2020, she voiced several characters on the animated series The 100. Her contract for the second season of Big Shot set a salary in line with the SAG-AFTRA union's new production schedules.
