Jennifer Grey was in a rental car in Ireland when her life changed in a head-on collision. She was 1987, and only a few days remained before the premiere of the film that would launch her to worldwide stardom. She survived the impact, but carried a guilt that kept her from enjoying the success that followed.
Her entry into the industry was no accident. The daughter of Joel Grey and granddaughter of comedian Mickey Katz, Jennifer grew up in an environment where show business was the only language spoken. But she didn't fit the aesthetic standards of the Los Angeles casting offices.
In 1986, she played Ferris Bueller's sister and showed a dry comedic rhythm. Her face had personality, which set her apart from the interchangeable blonde actresses of the era.
And then came the dancing.
Patrick Swayze was not her ideal co-star. They didn't get along from the shoot of Red Dawn in 1984. But the physical chemistry in Dirty Dancing worked because both were dancers before they were method actors. The film cost only six million dollars and ended up grossing more than two hundred million at the global box office.
In 1989, she decided to have her nose surgically altered on the advice of her mother and several talent agents. The result was an absolute professional disaster. The rhinoplasty was so radical that her own friends didn't recognize her at industry parties.
She went from being a star with a unique look to an attractive but invisible presence for audiences. She lost her career on the operating table by trying to meet a standard of beauty that no one had really asked of her.
But he didn't stop.
Throughout the nineties and the early two-thousands, she worked in TV movies and voiced animated characters. In 1999, she starred in the series It's Like, You Know…, where she poked fun at her own aesthetic tragedy with rather sharp humor.
She won the eleventh season of Dancing with the Stars in 2010. That reminded viewers that her talent for movement was still intact despite decades of supporting roles. In 2018, she appeared in the film Untogether and had a recurring supporting arc on Grey's Anatomy in 2019.
She published her memoir, Out of the Corner, in 2022. In the book, she recounted without filters her relationship with Matthew Broderick and how fame was an unbearable burden for much of her youth.
It was a necessary confession.
In 2024, the production company Lionsgate confirmed that the script for the sequel to Dirty Dancing was ready to enter preproduction. Jennifer Grey is listed as executive producer and star of this new project, which aims to close a circle opened almost forty years ago. Filming was scheduled to take place in North Carolina locations with an estimated budget of 35 million dollars.
