She was fifteen when she traveled to London for an open audition in front of fifteen thousand hopefuls. Evanna Lynch was not a professional actress in 2006. She was just an Irish fan who had been corresponding with J.K. Rowling during her hospital stay for anorexia.
Obsession saved her life.
Rowling confided in a letter that if she overcame the illness, she could audition for the role of Luna Lovegood. So she did. In 2007, she appeared in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, bringing an oddness that was not in the original script.
Her whispery voice and faraway gaze won over British critics from the first minute. She wasn't playing a character. Lynch simply inhabited a mental space that the rest of the cast could not understand.
After the magical franchise ended in 2011, many expected Lynch to go on to romantic comedies or Hollywood action films. But she chose the path of auteur cinema and activism. She settled in Los Angeles to study acting formally while turning down supporting roles at major studios.
In 2015, she led the cast of My Name Is Emily. The film earned several IFTA nominations and showed the industry a woman capable of carrying a complex psychological drama. Filming took place on location in Ireland over five weeks of extreme weather.
And then came the writing.
Because for Lynch, public exposure only makes sense if it serves a clear political cause. In 2017, she launched the podcast The ChickPeeps about vegan ethics. The project ran until 2022, drew millions of annual downloads, and did so without the backing of any major media network.
In 2021, she published her memoir under the title The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting. It isn't the typical book of set anecdotes for teens. The text details her rebuilding of her body and identity after the illness without slipping into cheap sentimentality.
It was an exercise in brutal honesty.
Lynch turned down several publishing offers that wanted a lighter tone for her memoir. She preferred a raw account that unsettled part of her fan base. In 2022, the book established itself as a reference in mental health literature in the United Kingdom.
Around 2023, she focused on London theater with the play Under the Black Rock. She played Cashel in a political drama set in Belfast. The role demanded a far more aggressive and dry vocal delivery than anything she had done on the big screen.
In 2024, she signed on for the film Influenced. It is a dark satire inspired by the work of Oscar Wilde in which she plays a makeup artist obsessed with digital success. The production was shot entirely indoors on a budget of less than five million euros.
The international distribution deal for this feature film was closed at the Cannes market at a valuation of three million dollars.
