Phoebe Fox was born in 1987 into a family where acting was not an exotic choice but a family trade. The daughter of Richard Cordery and Stuart Fox, she grew up watching characters being built right in her family's living room. In 2010, she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and wasted no time finding her place.
Her formal training gave her the tools to avoid flat roles. But it was her ability to project a cutting vulnerability that caught the attention of casting directors in London.
The stage was her first battlefield.
In 2014, she played Catherine in the production of A View from the Bridge directed by Ivo van Hove. That staging at the Young Vic later transferred to Broadway and earned her an Olivier Award nomination. It caught the attention of New York critics for an unknown British actress who, until then, had been largely outside the European circuit.
Film came knocking with The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death in 2014. It was a demanding physical shoot in which she had to carry the weight of a psychological horror sequel on her shoulders. The film was not a massive critical hit, but it showed that Fox could carry a commercial production on her own.
Then came auteur television.
In 2015, she took part in Eye in the Sky alongside Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman. Playing a drone operator in a war-tension thriller demanded absolute restraint. Fox spent nearly the entire time seated in front of screens. The tension came through only in her eyes and in a breathing rhythm controlled down to the millimeter.
But the project that changed her public profile was The Great in 2020. Over three seasons, she brought to life Marial, the fallen confidante of Catherine the Great. Tony McNamara's script demanded a frantic dark-comedy rhythm and constant sharp-tongued wit, which Fox delivered with precision from the very first episode.
The series ended its run in 2023.
Because Fox understands that supporting characters often get the best lines. Her Marial was cynical, a survivor and deeply human within a Russian court that functioned like a luxury madhouse. In 2021, she received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination as part of the series' ensemble cast.
Away from the spotlight, she keeps a private life in London with her husband, also actor Kyle Soller. They met while studying at RADA and have worked together on projects such as the play The Talented Mr. Ripley in 2010. Fox has said several times that she prefers the anonymity of the London Underground to the exposure of the red carpet.
In 2023, she took part in the voice cast of the video game Final Fantasy XVI. She voiced the character Benedikta Harman and recorded her motion capture sessions at studios in London over several months of technical work. The confidentiality agreement for this project lasted nearly three years.
