Kyle Soller landed in London with a plan but no contacts. In 2008, she completed her training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) after leaving behind her native Connecticut. It was a risky move, since crossing the Atlantic to study classical theatre did not guarantee a career on British soil.
His early years were a string of supporting roles and constant auditions. In 2011, he took part in The Faith Machine at the Royal Court Theatre. That job helped him establish himself in an extremely competitive circuit where an accent is often an insurmountable barrier for foreigners.
But theatre would bring him his greatest professional joy.
In 2018, he landed the lead role in The Inheritance. The play explored the legacy of the AIDS crisis in New York across seven hours of performance divided into two parts. Soller played Eric Glass with a fragility that left London audiences speechless for months.
In 2019, he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor for this role. He was the first American to win in that main category. The jury praised his ability to sustain such an extended narrative without falling into dramatic excess or physical exhaustion.
And the television industry was quick to call.
Between 2015 and 2018, he played Francis Poldark in the BBC series Poldark. His character was a man tormented by debt and envy toward his cousin. Soller avoided the stock heavy-villain archetype and built a figure full of human weaknesses that connected with audiences.
In 2022, he entered the Star Wars universe with Andor. He played Syril Karn (an obsessive inspector desperately seeking validation from the Empire). His performance as a pathetic yet dangerous bureaucrat broke the usual mold of the franchise's villains.
He works in absolute silence.
In 2023, he appeared in the Netflix miniseries Bodies. He played Inspector Hillinghead in 1890. The script demanded absolute restraint given the sexual repression of the era, and the actor used his body language to convey that social suffocation.
His creative process is technical and not very prone to improvisation. In 2012, he had a brief role in Anna Karenina under the direction of Joe Wright. That experience taught him that wardrobe and posture dictate body movement before any line of dialogue does.
Before filming, he studies the historical context of the script for weeks. So he prefers the rigor of prior research to the spontaneity of the set. In 2017, he joined the cast of Marrowbone (a Spanish production shot in English), where he explored psychological horror under the direction of Sergio G. Sánchez.
Filming for the second season of Andor wrapped in February 2024 after overcoming logistical complications caused by the U.S. union strikes.
