Gwilym Lee wasn't chasing fame quickly when they enrolled in English Literature at Cardiff University. Their real technical training came later at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. There, they won the Gold Medal in 2008. It was a serious sign of their aptitude for classical drama.
Before hitting the big screen, he worked under acclaimed theater directors. In 2009, he shared the stage with Jude Law in a production of Hamlet that toured from London to New York. That New York experience gave him the stage experience he needed to understand the rhythm of the American industry.
And the bet on theater paid off.
In 2011, they took part in the ambitious series Land Girls. It was their first real exposure to a mass audience in the UK. But the real change of pace came in 2013, when they joined the cast of Midsomer Murders. They played Sergeant Charlie Nelson for three full seasons until 2016.
Many actors would have stayed stuck in the comfort of British procedural television. Lee decided to leave the series to pursue projects that demanded a deeper physical or psychological transformation.
The year 2018 defined his international profile. Playing a living musician as recognizable as Brian May in Bohemian Rhapsody carried an obvious risk of parody. Lee spent months studying the guitarist's gestures and learned to reproduce his exact movements on stage.
The film earned $910 million at the global box office.
But Lee didn't want to be just the guy who looked like a rock star. In 2019, he shot Top End Wedding in Australia to explore the romantic comedy genre. He was looking for fresh air after the exhaustion of the global Oscar campaign.
In 2020, he began his run on the series The Great. His role as Grigor Dymov let him play with satire and dark humor over three seasons. His chemistry with Nicholas Hoult drove many of his scenes until the production wrapped in 2023.
The actor prefers shoots that take him on the road and expose him to different settings. In 2024, he joined the cast of the second season of The Tourist. The filming moved to Ireland to shoot in the landscapes of Dublin and Wicklow under the direction of the Williams brothers.
His career hasn't followed a straight line.
In 2023, he appeared in the short film The After alongside David Oyelowo. The piece was even nominated for an Oscar in 2024. It was a conscious decision to support smaller-scale projects with a denser emotional weight than major studio productions.
Gwilym Lee has a permanent residence in London. In 2025, he plans to keep balancing high-budget video game voice work with independent TV productions. His contract for the series The Tourist included specific availability clauses for location shoots across Europe.
