Jemima Rooper didn't need to go through drama school to understand the craft. At age twelve, she was already working in front of a camera in The Higher Mortals. She had that direct gaze that, years later, would turn her into a recurring face on British television.
Her role as George in The Famous Five during 1995 brought her premature fame that was hard to manage. That girl who pretended to be a boy to go on adventures marked the start of a constant relationship with the industry. It was a long and demanding shoot for someone who was just entering adolescence.
There was no rest after her success as a child star.
In 2001, she landed As If. The series broke the fourth wall and allowed her to explore a more urban and adult register. But her big international breakthrough came in 2006 with The Black Dahlia. Brian De Palma cast her in a supporting role in a 50 million dollar production, where she shared the set with Scarlett Johansson.
In 2008, she starred in Lost in Austen. Playing Amanda Price was a fundamental change of pace because the plot required blending modern sarcasm with the literature of Jane Austen. British critics began to take her ability to carry complex stories seriously, seemingly without effort.
Because Rooper has always preferred fieldwork to the glamour of red carpets. So she alternated big-budget projects with stage plays in the West End. In 2011 she performed at the National Theatre in One Man, Two Guvnors. The play was an absolute phenomenon in London and moved to Broadway in 2012.
The stage gave her a technical solidity that film sometimes overlooks.
In 2013, she appeared in One Chance and shortly after joined the cast of Atlantis for the BBC. In this series she played Medusa for two full seasons. It was a physical shoot in Morocco that required hours of prosthetic makeup and total commitment in action scenes.
In 2022, she took on the role of Olivia Winfield in Flowers in the Attic: The Origin. It was an intense four-episode shoot for Lifetime that explored the origins of a very dark literary saga. That same year, she filmed Matriarch, a rural horror film distributed by Hulu in which the dramatic weight rested almost entirely on her performance.
And the result was one of the rawest pieces of her career.
In 2023, she joined the cast of The Inheritance, a family drama on Channel 5 that explored the conflicts following an unexpected death. In 2024, she took part in the series Geek Girl, playing Annabel Manners for Netflix. It's another international production added to her list of work from the past decade.
Jemima Rooper lives in London and has a filmography of over sixty professional credits across film and television. Her longest contract to date involved shooting 26 consecutive episodes during her youth. She is currently listed in the records of the agency United Agents in the United Kingdom.
