In 1977, Alfredo Castro made his professional acting debut in a half-empty theater while the army patrolled the avenues of Santiago. He was twenty-two years old and had a sharp jawline that seemed carved for dry drama.
In 1983, he traveled to London to train at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. That British stint taught him that physical restraint was worth more than any shouting on stage.
After returning to Santiago in 1989, he founded the theater company Teatro La Memoria.
There was no money to pay the electricity bill for the venue.
Throughout the 1990s, he paid his theater's rent thanks to broadcast television. In daytime productions such as Romané or Pampa Ilusión, he accepted roles as an eccentric leading man without any class-related hesitation.
His deal with the local industry was out in the open. He took paychecks from commercial television to finance productions that blew up conventional morality. In those theater texts, he experimented with political violence and the open wounds of a country that pretended to have forgotten its repression.
And the formula worked for fifteen years.
But film barely called him. Directors of the time considered him an actor too tied to the stage or too worn out by home screens.
In 2008, Pablo Larraín handed him the script for Tony Manero. Castro was already over fifty when he took on the role of Raúl Peralta, a pathetic criminal obsessed with disco music who coldly murders neighbors during a curfew.
For that shoot, he lost ten kilos eating almost exclusively apples and cans of tuna. His gaunt figure and sunken eyes gave Latin American cinema a physical form for the bureaucratic horror of the dictatorship.
His creative partnership with Larraín continued with Post Mortem in 2010 and El Club in 2015, where he played a priest complicit in church abuse, secluded on the Chilean coast.
The camera barely blinked under his gaze.
Because on the big screen, theatrics had no place. That same 2015, he won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival with From Afar, the debut feature by Venezuelan director Lorenzo Vigas, in which he played a middle-aged man who paid marginalized young men in Caracas for silent companionship.
In 2020, he took the lead role in I'm Afraid, Matador, an adaptation of Pedro Lemebel's novel of the same name. He built the character of La Loca del Frente with wounded dignity and avoided any heavy-handed strokes in an environment suffocated by the military.
So calls from outside Chile began piling up in his inbox. He appeared in more than fifty international feature films without ever setting foot in a film school, taking roles in movies like Red in 2018, The Substitute in 2022, or the Patagonian western The Settlers in 2023.
In 2024, he moved to Barcelona to shoot Polvo serán under Carlos Marqués-Marcet. For that film about euthanasia and marital companionship, he earned a Special Jury Mention at the Valladolid International Film Festival.
That same 2024, he presented the financing for The Dead Workers at the Cannes Film Festival, an adaptation of Diamela Eltit's novel that he presented as his formal debut behind the camera.
The production budget was set at 1.2 million euros, funded by capital from three countries.
