In 2002 Carolina Gaitán joined the group Escarcha after winning a talent contest in Colombia. She was only 18 years old. That musical experience didn't last long, but it gave her a firsthand look at how the industry works before she made the leap into acting for good.
Television didn't take long to come knocking.
Between 2009 and 2010 she played Catalina Bernabeu in Isa TK+. It was her first real connection with young audiences across the continent. That role let her travel and realize her voice could be more than a tool for singing radio-friendly pop on variety shows.
In 2015 she joined the cast of Celia, where she played Lola Calvo. It was a reconstruction project where music and acting began to go hand in hand. The shoot demanded a vocal discipline that moved her away from more commercial registers to explore son and salsa with historical rigor.
Her mass recognition came in 2016 with Sin senos sí hay paraíso. She played Catalina Marín over several seasons. More than sixty countries bought broadcasting rights for this story centered on the brutality of drug trafficking and personal survival in extreme violence.
But typecasting is a real risk in long-running productions. Gaitán decided to balance these shoots with musical theater projects in Bogotá. She wanted to keep her stage agility while millions of viewers saw her every night on the small screen through international networks.
And the risk paid off.
In 2021 she voiced Pepa Madrigal in the Disney film Encanto. The song No se habla de Bruno became a statistical phenomenon that was hard to process. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and outperformed animated classics that had led global sales charts for decades.
Nobody expected such a global impact.
She appeared at the Oscars ceremony in 2022. It was a major showcase in front of the big studios in Los Angeles. She took advantage of the momentum to move temporarily to the United States and look for roles outside the traditional Spanish-language market. She was looking for projects where language wasn't the only label on her resume.
In 2023 she starred in the survival thriller Quicksand. The film was shot entirely in English and centers on a couple trapped in quicksand. It was a physical challenge that pulled her away from the usual glamour spotlight and into the literal mud of a low-budget, high-intensity emotional shoot.
Carolina Gaitán founded her own production company to manage her music and audiovisual projects without depending on third parties. In 2024 she worked on the series Second Chances. The management of her career now depends on technical and financial decisions she makes herself from her office in Miami.
In 2025 her schedule includes recording a new studio album produced by Nicolás Tovar. The distribution deal for the European market was closed with a recording budget of over 200,000 dollars to ensure the quality of the final mixes at studios in Nashville.
