Pedro Almodóvar spent twelve years working as a clerk at Telefónica. He bought his first Super 8 camera with his salary from the national phone company and began shooting silent shorts in 1974. He had no formal training, but he had a narrative urgency that clashed with the gray Spain of the late dictatorship. His learning was purely hands-on, shooting directly on the streets of a Madrid that was just beginning to wake up.

The Madrid Movida scene provided his natural backdrop.

In 1980, he premiered Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap on a budget of half a million pesetas. It was a chaotic production that dragged on for months due to lack of money. Still, that shoot laid the groundwork for a style that blended punk with the most down-to-earth Madrid street culture. The actors worked for free, and the locations were friends' homes that lent their living rooms for weekend shoots.

El Deseo's Independence

Commercial success did not come right away. Before the major awards, he founded the production company El Deseo in 1985 with his brother Agustín. This decision was key to keeping full control over the final cut of his works. Creative freedom became his absolute priority, and that financial independence let him take risks when other directors depended on decisions made by others.

And the gamble paid off.

With Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in 1988, Spanish cinema found a path to massive export. The film took in eight million dollars in the United States and earned an Oscar nomination for the director from La Mancha. It was the moment when his saturated colors and production design began to be recognized as his personal signature in international markets.

The Shift to Dry Drama

During the nineties, his style shifted toward more restrained storytelling. All About My Mother won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1999 and turned him into a global icon. He was no longer just the provocative director of his early days. Critics now compared him to the great masters of melodrama for his handling of pain and female identity.

In 2002, he won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Talk to Her. Interestingly, the Spanish Academy of Cinema did not select it to represent the country that year. He won the award through the direct route to Hollywood after securing the support of American unions. The story of two men caring for women in comas broke through cultural and language barriers.

From there, his films became more introspective.

In Pain and Glory, released in 2019, the director drew on his own life to build a story about illness and creation. Filming took place largely in an exact replica of his own living room in Madrid. Antonio Banderas won the Best Actor award at Cannes for playing a filmmaker alter ego who suffers the same physical ailments he does.

The move into English was a process he thought through for decades. After several failed attempts and rejected projects, he shot the short film The Human Voice in 2020 with Tilda Swinton. It was a technical test before taking on a full-length feature outside his usual linguistic comfort zone.

In 2024, he premiered The Room Next Door at the Venice Film Festival. The film won the Golden Lion and marked his definitive entry into the English-speaking market. The screenplay adapts Sigrid Nunez's novel and explores the right to a dignified death with an autumnal color palette. The production had a budget of thirteen million euros and was shot in Madrid and New York.

El Deseo keeps a fixed staff of about fifteen employees at its headquarters in the Argüelles neighborhood of Madrid.
