When she arrives at the studio late, he has already left. On her answering machine, she finds a message from him asking her to pack his things, because he will be coming by to pick them up. Critic Pauline Kael of The New Yorker called it "the most cheerful of all the comedies about the battle of the sexes" and said it was livelier and sexier than Almodóvar's earlier films.

It was reported that Jane Fonda had acquired the rights to an English-language version, which they might star in alongside Julia Roberts, although the project never came to fruition.

The stage adaptation closed on Broadway in January 2011, but later, with revisions to the script, it opened in London to a warmer reception.

In 2010, Empire magazine ranked the film at number 78 on its list of "The 100 Best Films of World Cinema."

The shoot strained the relationship between Pedro Almodóvar and Carmen Maura; it took them 18 years to work together again, in "Volver" (2006).

The film won five Goya Awards out of 16 nominations, including Best Film and Best Actress for Carmen Maura.

It was the most successful Spanish film at the box office in 1988 and 1989, according to figures cited in the film press.

With box office earnings of about $7.25 million in the United States and Canada, it became the Spanish film with the greatest commercial success in that country at the time.
