In her early twenties, Loles León made her living singing couplets and performing rowdy cabaret at the Cúpula Venus on Las Ramblas. She came from a working-class family in La Barceloneta and had no industry connections.
Nobody was waiting for her in Madrid when she arrived there in the late seventies with a suitcase and few pesetas. She performed wherever she could, often in alternative venues where audiences blew smoke in the comedians' faces.
And on one of those nights, Pedro Almodóvar saw her on stage.
Her professional partnership with Almodóvar grew two years later with ¡Átame!, where she played the sister of Victoria Abril and once again competed for the statuette. Almodóvar made the most of her comic aggressiveness, that street-smart diction that never apologized and broke the mold of the grieving actresses of the era.
But León didn't marry just one author.
Vicente Aranda cast her in El amante bilingüe in 1993 and then in Libertarias in 1996, where she earned her third nomination for the Spanish Academy Awards. Two years later, Fernando Trueba chose her for La niña de tus ojos, giving her the role of Trini and adding a fourth nomination that also failed to win. She suffered four Goya losses in just ten years, a statistic she turned into a recurring joke in her interviews.
At the start of the century, mainstream television turned her into a daily presence for millions of viewers. In 2003, she accepted the role of Paloma Cuesta in Aquí no hay quien viva, a mid-budget sitcom produced by José Luis Moreno that smashed ratings from its first broadcasts on Antena 3.
Her character carried much of the neighborhood storylines thanks to over-the-top dialogue and the manners of a building concierge with delusions of grandeur.
And then the contract disputes began.
The actress demanded a salary increase in line with the ratings peaks that came close to a forty percent screen share. The production company Miramón Mendi flatly refused to review the figures, and the working relationship broke down in the middle of the second season.
To explain her absence, the writers sent her character out the courtyard window in episode thirty. She spent months in fictional coma while anonymous actresses dubbed her voice, until the character's death was finally made official without her ever returning to the set.
After the television walkout, a period of scattered work followed, in which offers for auteur films began to dry up. She returned to commercial theater with productions such as La gran depresión in 2011 alongside Bibiana Fernández, touring provincial capitals with farcical comedies designed to fill seats without relying on public subsidies.
In 2016, Alberto Caballero brought her back for the neighborhood sitcom factory, casting her in La que se avecina as Menchu Carrascosa. The contract guaranteed steady work that lasted nearly a decade across six full seasons.
So family films ended up absorbing her mature profile.
Santiago Segura joined the 2020 saga Padre no hay más que uno 2: La llegada de la suegra to play Milagros, a role written specifically for her that she reprised in the 2022 and 2024 installments. That second film took in more than twelve million euros at the domestic box office.
In 2021, she premiered the autobiographical musical monologue Una noche con ella, directed by Gabriel Olivares, which toured Spanish theaters until the end of 2023.
In November 2024, she shot the ensemble comedy Sin instrucciones on location in Madrid, with a production budget of three million one hundred thousand euros.
