Pedro Almodóvar was looking for a specific look for Matador in 1986. Eva Cobo appeared on screen at nineteen with a physical presence that the Manchego director's camera exploited without hesitation. That film placed her at the center of a Spanish cinema trying to shake off the dust of the Transition. But the label of Almodóvar girl is often a glass trap.
And she realized it early on.
In 1987, she appeared in the series Lorca, muerte de un poeta under the direction of Juan Antonio Bardem. It was an ambitious production that aimed for historical accuracy, and Cobo had to prove there was more to her than photogenic looks under the spotlights. The industry wanted her for roles where physical appearance outweighed the script.
So she decided to try her luck beyond national borders. She worked in Italy and France during the late eighties. In 1988, she starred in Pasión de hombre, and a year later she worked under José María Forqué in the series Miguel Servet, la sangre y la ceniza. Television became her most stable refuge amid the volatility of auteur cinema.
Her personal life ended up taking up more space in the magazines than her own acting projects. Her relationship with Toni Cantó and the later media distancing generated a buzz that she rarely fed. For years, her name was tied to the gossip press more than to the box office.
In 2011, the family tragedy of her daughter Carlota's death in a car accident marked a complete break from public life.
Cobo drastically stepped away from film sets. She settled in London in search of an anonymity that was impossible to find in Spain. There began a phase focused on production and on businesses far removed from pure acting.
There was no triumphant comeback because there was never an official farewell. In 2014, she founded her own audiovisual production company with the aim of controlling the creative process from the office. Her interest shifted toward content management and advertising.
And the British market offered her a more technical environment.
Despite offers to return to Spanish fiction, she has kept a low profile. In 2018, she was seen at occasional events, but her priority remains international project consulting. The company she runs in the United Kingdom mainly bills for preproduction services to third parties.
Her last appearance in a big-budget production was a supporting role in the film Buscando a Eimish from 2012. Company records currently link her to real estate asset management and communications consulting in the English capital.
