Cecilia Roth

She landed in Madrid in 1976, nineteen years old, with a suitcase that smelled of forced farewell. The military coup in Argentina had just dismantled her family's life, so the actress didn't choose Spain out of bohemian whim but out of pure political urgency.

On the streets of Malasaña, nobody asked for academic credentials. She plunged straight into the night shoots and the gatherings that rehearsed forms of freedom before the law authorized them on paper.

That first youth allowed for no pauses.

The Rise from Celluloid to Heroin

Iván Zulueta put her in front of a sixteen-millimeter camera in Arrebato (1979). Roth played Sexilia in a story where cinema devours the filmmakers themselves, a role that earned nothing at the box office but fixed her face in the European midnight-movie circuit.

Pedro Almodóvar saw that film and decided to call her right away. In Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap (1980) and Labyrinth of Passion (1982), Cecilia delivered a rapid-fire Buenos Aires accent that fit the cheeky energy of Madrid pop.

But the personal toll of those years caught up with her. Roth bought a ticket back to Buenos Aires in the mid-1980s to reset her routine and find refuge in theater productions built on dense, demanding texts.

And the return left her completely undone.

Dramatic intensity on two shores

Adolfo Aristarain handed her the script for Un lugar en el mundo in 1992. That role as a rural doctor in an isolated province revealed a restrained actress that Spanish cinema had not yet known, far from the wigs of the Nueva Ola.

Her definitive breakthrough came with Martín (Hache) in 1997. The actress delivered a heartbreaking monologue in a Madrid kitchen that earned her the Goya Award for Best Actress, becoming the first foreign performer to receive that honor from the Spanish Academy.

International contract circuit

In 2004, she headlined the police thriller Epitafios, produced for HBO. That shoot demanded eight months of nonstop filming in Buenos Aires, under industrial production standards that Spanish-language television had never known.

Durante la década siguiente repartió su agenda entre producciones de autor y llamadas puntuales de España. Participó en El Angel (2018) bajo la dirección de Luis Ortega y volvió al universo almodovariano en Pain and Glory (2019), donde solventó un papel breve con apenas tres jornadas de citación.

In 2020, she took the lead in the courtroom drama Crímenes de familia. Four years later, in 2024, she shot the satire Culpa cero and the feature film Goyo in the theaters of the Buenos Aires Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. The latter film closed out her year with a budget of $1.2 million and exactly four weeks of digital theater editing.
