Justina Bustos moved to Buenos Aires intending to study Art History. There was no master plan to conquer the film industry, nor a lifelong iron-clad vocation from childhood. But the Argentine capital has a momentum of its own that often devours academic plans. Before turning twenty, she was already training in theater and looking for her place in a city that gives nothing away to newcomers.
She spent some time in New York working as a waitress while taking acting classes. That period in the United States gave her a gritty realism that she would later bring to her darkest characters. She returned to Argentina broke but with her mind made up.
And the risk was worth it.
In 2015, she got the chance to play Mónica in the series Historia de un clan. It was a dry, complex role under the direction of Luis Ortega. That Underground production not only performed well with audiences but also put Bustos on the radar of directors looking for more than a pretty face. The series reconstructed the crimes of the Puccio family, and she brought a tense fragility that contrasted with the violence of the script.
Argentine television made her a household name with Las Estrellas in 2017. It was a fast-consumed phenomenon that forced her to handle brutal media exposure. But Justina Bustos already had her eyes on the other side of the pond. Her move into Spain was no accident. In 2022, she starred alongside Carmen Machi in the comedy Amor de madre for Netflix.
Filming in Mauritius was disrupted by the health crisis, and Bustos ended up spending weeks isolated in a public hospital in the African country. That forced confinement in 2021 inspired a documentary titled Sola en el paraíso. She shot it herself on her cell phone. It was an exercise in raw realism that exposed the seams of the industry when the lights go out during a global emergency. The piece became a technical testimony about the loneliness of the actor.
In 2022, she shared the screen with Álvaro Morte in the feature film Objetos. It was a thriller directed by Jorge Dorado, in which Bustos played Sara, a woman trapped in a human trafficking ring. The film demanded remarkable physical effort and a dramatic tone that moved her decisively away from her light comedy beginnings in Argentina. And it worked because she understood that silence says more than a scream.
Nothing is a coincidence in her career.
During 2023, she focused on auteur projects and collaborations that strengthened her profile in Europe. She appeared in the series Culpable and kept one foot in theater, always seeking texts that wouldn't pigeonhole her as the naive girl. Because Bustos's looks are often a trap for lazy casting directors. She fights for every line to break the porcelain image that the spotlights project onto her face.
In 2024, she shot the film Culpa propia under the direction of Francisco de la Fuente. The film's budget was set at two million euros, with a shooting schedule of six consecutive weeks on location in the province of Buenos Aires.
