In the summer of 1979, a sixteen-year-old girl with bright orange dyed hair urinated on a submissive woman in a Madrid basement. The sixteen-millimeter camera was operated by a Telefónica employee named Pedro Almodóvar. The film was Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap. Olvido Gara agreed to play Bom because she was promised imported vinyl records in exchange for her effort.

Nobody got paid a penny on that shoot.

That film debut finally premiered in 1980 after endless financial hardships and a chaotic edit that defied every academic norm of the Spanish film industry. The movie cost barely six million pesetas, raised through a popular subscription drive among friends and nighttime patrons. And the big screen discovered a character who shattered the bourgeois polish of the Transition without ever raising her voice.

From Celluloid Urine to the Children's Set

Almodóvar wanted to exploit that wild audacity, but the young woman preferred not to tie herself to the offices of producers on Gran Vía. In 1984, director Lolo Rico signed her to host La bola de cristal on Televisión Española. It seemed like an absolutely reckless move.

For four years, the singer led a Saturday morning show surrounded by latex puppets, acid slogans and songs written by musicians from Madrid's nightlife. Public television in the eighties allowed experiments that would have caused fires in boardrooms. The show drew as many as five million viewers in a country with only one channel.

But that cycle ended in 1988 with an internal ban over a sketch critical of the banking system and an immediate dismissal letter. State broadcasting canceled the show without hesitation. So the star went back to the tour vans without looking back or demanding industry honors.

The Art of Never Apologizing

Film trickled back to her over the following decades. In 1997, Juanma Bajo Ulloa gave her a cameo in Airbag, a hyperbolic satire that blew up the box office with nearly a million tickets sold. Later, Santiago Segura opened doors for her in 2018 with the comedy Sin rodeos.

She also agreed to voice Eunice, Frankenstein's hysterical wife, in the four animated installments of the Hotel Transylvania franchise distributed by Sony between 2012 and 2022. Madrid's dubbing industry praised her crisp, unaffected diction.

The market didn't see that move coming.

In 2011, the MTV Spain channel premiered Alaska y Mario, a look at her everyday life shot with a sophisticated tabloid aesthetic. The project launched with a modest eight-episode season aimed at niche cable audiences. The broadcast sent the channel's ratings soaring to a 2.7% share, an astronomical figure for a niche operator that quadrupled the channel's average.

The Public Screen and the Final Cut

In October 2020, Televisión Española tapped her to replace Concha Velasco as host of Cine de barrio. The choice caused a stir among the more conservative sectors of the traditional audience. But the new host simply applied relentless erudition to Spanish popular cinema of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. She knew the names of forgotten cinematographers, behind-the-scenes stories from CIFESA and the ruthless contracts of supporting actors.

The working relationship blew up in September 2023. RTVE dropped her services overnight after her collaborations with rival private networks were confirmed. The exit included no recorded farewell and no tribute on air.

In December 2024, the Movistar Plus platform premiered the documentary series Alaska Revelada, directed by Pite Piñas and produced by Shine Iberia after four months of filming at thirty different locations between Madrid and Mexico City. The production amassed more than 180 hours of raw footage before trimming the final cut to three fifty-minute episodes. The platform capped the final budget at 1.2 million euros, with no funds set aside for international film festivals.

Alaska Facts

Things you probably didn't know about Alaska

Alaska took her stage name from Lou Reed's "Caroline Says II," a song she listened to during her teenage years.
As a little girl, she decided to bring her Barbie doll to Spain when she moved from Mexico; years later, that doll appeared on the cover of the single "Horror en el hipermercado."
Before devoting herself fully to music, she worked as a secretary for a year and later became a journalist, interviewing figures as different as Manuel Fraga and Camilo José Cela.
She was photographed by Andy Warhol and, at an official reception in Madrid, she sat next to Isabel Preysler during the visit of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales.
Alaska and Mario Vaquerizo first got married in Las Vegas: she wore a Dolly Parton outfit and he wore a Elvis Presley one. Since that marriage was not valid in Spain, they later held another civil wedding during the show "Alaska y Mario."
As a teenager, she wanted to join Kraftwerk, which she considered a German group of reference for its aesthetic and its unique character.
Fangoria even opened for Pet Shop Boys, one of the bands Alaska had admired for years.
Alaska has said she collects plastic bags, a hobby she has kept for a long time.
For "Extrapolaciones," Fangoria recorded 30 songs, 26 of which were cover versions of Spanish bands released over three decades.
