Mario Vaquerizo didn't invent Madrid's celebrity scene, but he learned to cash in on it before anyone else. He holds a degree in Information Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid and spent the second half of the 1990s holed up in record company offices, writing press releases and handling promotional tapes. He worked behind the scenes for groups such as Dover and Fangoria.
The publicist wanted the spotlight.
In November 1999, he married Olvido Gara in Las Vegas, dressed as Elvis Presley. That civil ceremony in Nevada looked like a private eccentricity, but it became the first brick in a commercial brand calculated down to the millimeter. Five years later he founded the music group Nancys Rubias and adopted the stage alias Nancy Anoréxica.
The group lip-synced openly. The artifice was the core concept of the musical project, and audiences responded by filling venues for two decades without demanding instrumental rigor.
In May 2011, MTV Spain premiered Alaska y Mario, a reality series that opened up his Gran Vía apartment in Madrid. The cameras documented the preparations for their legal wedding in Spain, amid crates of beer and visits from underground artists.
The show drew a 4.6 percent audience share in the season one finale. That was an enormous figure for a pay channel in Spain at the time. And traditional television took notice right away.
Dubbing directors discovered a comic gem in his nasal voice. In 2012, Sony Pictures cast him to voice Frankenstein in the Spanish version of Hotel Transylvania, a role he reprised in the three commercial sequels released in 2015, 2018 and 2022. He also played the poop emoji in The Emoji Movie in 2017.
The family film paid the bills on time.
But television demanded more screen time. He took supporting roles in TV fiction such as La que se avecina and made brief appearances in series like Paquita Salas in 2016, where he practically parodied himself. So the leap to the big screen as a lead actor was only a matter of time.
In February 2024, La reina del convento hit theaters, a comedy directed by Carmen Perona Cabrera. Vaquerizo took the lead role as Sor Juanita, an adult orphan who tries to join a cloistered convent in Andalusia. He shared the cast with established Spanish comedy actresses such as Isabel Ordaz, Gemma Cuervo and Antonia San Juan.
Critics tore the feature film apart without mercy.
Because the script piled up disjointed jokes and poor technical craftsmanship that baffled film critics as much as the singer's own fans. The box office barely reached 85,000 euros after several weeks in theaters in Spain. The production quietly slipped through cinemas before finding refuge on digital rental platforms.
In October 2024, he fell 2.5 meters from the stage at the Horteralia festival in Cáceres. The impact fractured two lumbar vertebrae, caused temporary vision problems and completely halted his filming contracts for more than ninety days.
