For 2005 million viewers across Spain, dinner времени was spent watching a recovering addict stumble through a working-class neighborhood in fiction. Paco León carried the weight of Luis Mariano García on his shoulders. That character devoured every previous attempt at contemporary dance or pixel-perfect impressions of Homo Zapping. On mainstream television, that kind of popularity often works like a lifetime sentence.
He decided to blow up the label from the inside.
Rather than settling into the routine of a weekly studio schedule, León began developing his own projects with home cameras and minimal resources. By 2006 he had already brought Ácaros to life, a Martian comedy starring tiny puppets for the Cuatro channel. The show threw off audiences of the time and quietly disappeared from the schedule. Still, that technical stumble taught him how real production worked far from the industry spotlight.
In 2012, the decisive shake-up came. With barely 40,000 euros saved from his television work, he gathered his mother Carmina Barrios and his sister María León to shoot Carmina o revienta in marathon workdays. The approach was not only artistic but also commercial. León decided to release the film simultaneously in theaters, on digital platforms such as Filmin, and on DVD.
The major theater chains were furious. Several cinema chains boycotted the release for breaking the classic distribution windows the industry defended tooth and nail. The move was risky and stirred up plenty of anger in the offices of the Federation of Spanish Cinemas.
And the gamble paid off.
The film broke the traditional distribution model with more than 60,000 legal downloads in its first week and earned three Goya Award nominations. In 2014 he premiered the direct sequel, titled Carmina y amén. This time he had a formal production and a standard budget, showing that the raw, down-to-earth portrait of his family surroundings reflected a narrative voice of his own and not a lucky break.
After his family-friendly phase, he switched gears completely. In 2016 he adapted an Australian comedy to film Kiki, el amor se hace, exploring a range of sexual predilections with light humor and a bright aesthetic far from the usual drama of Spanish cinema. Audiences responded massively at the box office.
The feature film surpassed six million euros at the Spanish box office with nearly one million viewers in theaters. That commercial performance gave him full credit to take on projects of greater budgetary scope.
In 2018, he co-developed the series Arde Madrid with Anna R. Costa for Movistar Plus+. Shot in elegant, high-contrast black and white, the production dissected Ava Gardner's stay in Madrid in the early 1960s through the eyes of its servants. The series was a hit at the television critics' awards. Although a second season was approved on paper, León and Costa decided to cancel the continuation of filming so as not to artificially stretch the plot.
As an actor, he always kept one foot in other people's projects. In 2022 he shared the cast with Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal in the American production The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, playing a supporting villain in an English-language action shoot. That same 2022 he directed Rainbow for Netflix, a free-form musical reinterpretation of The Wizard of Oz that critics harshly divided over its formal excess.
He kept switching gears as a performer in popular comedies such as Mari(dos) in 2023 and Sin instrucciones in 2024. He also sought darker territory, as shown by his lead role in the psychological drama No mires a los ojos, directed by Félix Viscarret in 2022 and based on the novel by Juan José Millás.
In 2026 he returned behind the camera as director and screenwriter with Aída y vuelta, the feature film conceived as a metanarrative finale to the universe that made him known two decades earlier. Filming wrapped after seven weeks of work split between Madrid and Seville, with an official budget of 4.2 million euros funded by Telecinco Cinema and Prime Video under a strict commitment to a theatrical exclusive window before moving to the on-demand catalog.
