Jean-Paul Gaultier never set foot in a design school to learn the craft. In 1970 he sent several sketches to Pierre Cardin and ended up working for him on the very day of his eighteenth birthday. That early boldness set the course of a career that always had one eye on the big screen, building characters rather than simply showing off clothes.
And the gamble paid off.
For Gaultier, clothing was not just decoration but a first-rate narrative tool. In 1989 he worked with Peter Greenaway on The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover to create a suffocating color experience. Helen Mirren's costumes changed color depending on the room her character moved through during the film.
In 1995 he designed the costumes for The City of Lost Children for Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. The challenge was creating textures that would work under a very specific dark green lighting. Gaultier used thick wools and aged leathers to add volume to actors who looked like they had stepped out of an industrial nightmare.
Film was his laboratory.
In 1997, Luc Besson entrusted him with the look of The Fifth Element, commissioning 954 different costumes. Gaultier personally checked the extras' uniforms every morning at Pinewood Studios to make sure every seam matched the director's vision. The costume budget exceeded the usual levels of any European production of that decade.
His work with Pedro Almodóvar began in 1993 with the designs for Kika. But his deepest technical collaboration came in 2011 with The Skin I Live In. The flesh-colored suit worn by Elena Anaya functions as a second skin essential to the physical survival of the main character.
He was not after beauty but coherence.
In January 2020, he announced his retirement from the runway with a crowded show at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. In 2022 he supervised the exhibition Cinema and Fashion at CaixaForum Madrid to explore how film shaped his own creative vision. His fashion house's historical archive holds 30,000 original pieces under strict humidity and temperature control.
