Elena Anaya

Elena Anaya arrived in Madrid in 1996 after being expelled from the RESAD for lack of discipline. She was twenty-one and had a determination that unsettled her teachers. But that same year she landed the lead role in África, and Spanish cinema realized a different kind of presence had arrived.

And the gamble paid off.

During her first years in the capital, she took on a string of supporting roles in which her petite frame contrasted with an aggressive energy. In 2001, Julio Medem called her to play Sex and Lucía. That role as Belén earned her first Goya nomination and put her on the radar of major European productions.

The Skin and the Operating Room of Almodóvar

Pedro Almodóvar first tried out with a brief role in Talk to Her in 2002. Almost ten years passed before the director from La Mancha gave her the character that changed her professional standing. In 2011, she starred in The Skin I Live In alongside Antonio Banderas.

It was a process of physical transformation.

Her performance in Vera Cruz was an exercise in extreme restraint. **She won the Goya for Best Actress** and broke free of the eternal supporting-role image the industry had given her. She didn't need grand gestures to convey the horror of a body forcibly rebuilt.

The American film industry came calling.

But Anaya never wanted to settle in Los Angeles permanently. She took part in big-budget productions such as Van Helsing in 2004 or Wonder Woman in 2017 (where she played the villain Doctor Poison). She always preferred to return to Spain to shoot more intimate or daring projects.

Retreating into Domestic Formats

Starting in 2020, her career began to focus more intensely on television platforms and genre films. She shot Rifkin’s Festival under the direction of Woody Allen, and shortly after she plunged into psychological suspense with Jaula in 2022.

In 2023, she led the cast of Mentiras pasajeras for SkyShowtime. Her shift toward acid comedy allowed her to explore a side that her earlier dramatic roles had tended to hide. But her interest in dark stories soon returned.

In 2024, she starred in the series Las largas sombras for Disney+. Filming took place mainly in Elda and other locations in the province of Alicante over thirteen weeks.
