Paz Campos Trigo arrived in Madrid in the late nineties with little more than a suitcase and the swagger of Triana. In 1997, she landed a small role in Menudo es mi padre and soon moved on to Más que amigos, but it was the comedy Siete vidas that put her face in every living room in Spain. That waitress named Laura gave her the confidence to try her hand at auteur cinema.
Julio Medem was looking for a raw gaze for Sex and Lucía in 2001. The result was a box-office and critical explosion that earned her the Goya for Best New Actress. More than a million moviegoers flocked to theaters to see a film that broke the aesthetic molds of the era.
And the gamble paid off.
Before turning thirty, she decided Spain was too small for her. In 2004, James L. Brooks called her to star in Spanglish alongside Adam Sandler. She didn't speak English and had to learn her lines phonetically during the first weeks of filming in Los Angeles. It was a risky move that kept her away from the national film industry for almost a decade.
In the United States, she worked with names such as Scarlett Johansson in The Spirit and under Frank Miller's direction in 2008. But the American industry tends to pigeonhole Latina actresses into supporting roles as femme fatales or sacrificing mothers. She took part in mid-budget productions and independent projects that did not always reach the shine her agency had hoped for.
Her life in California lasted ten years.
She returned to Europe to take back control of her personal narrative. In 2019, she joined the cast of Rambo: Last Blood alongside Sylvester Stallone, and in 2021 she shot the thriller El lodo under the direction of Iñaki Sánchez Arrieta. Her professional maturity allowed her to choose scripts where the dramatic weight rested on silence rather than physical exposition.
Her transition to directing took shape in 2024 with the release of Rita. It is a story set in Seville in the 1980s that explores a child's perspective on domestic violence. She wrote the screenplay herself and chose not to appear on screen so she could focus entirely on the staging. The production had a budget of two million euros and the support of various public institutions.
So her career stopped depending on other directors' calls. In 2024, she also joined the cast of the sci-fi film Aire, directed by Ricardo Cobián. The movie was shot entirely on locations in the Valencian Community with a crew of eighty people.
The film Rita had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in the Piazza Grande section.
