Before stepping onto a TV set in 1994 Paz Padilla spent her workdays as a nursing assistant at the Puerta del Mar University Hospital in Cádiz. That healthcare routine came to an end when a joke contest unlocked an unstoppable comedic talent built on her Cádiz accent, physical expressiveness and a boldness that disarmed the director on duty.
Television devoured her right away.
She went from telling jokes on Genio y figura to sharing late nights with Javier Sardà on Crónicas marcianas between 1997 and 1999. But her ambitions went well beyond the late-night talk show and five-minute sketches.
In 2000 Televisión Española handed her the reins of her first family sitcom, ¡Ala… Dina!, in which she played a thousand-year-old genie trapped in a lamp. The series drew more than four million weekly viewers during its first season, an astronomical figure that prompted programmers and casting directors to take a fresh look at her.
Her big-screen career began with brief appearances designed to capitalize on her popularity, without much complicated scriptwriting. In 1999 she appeared in Raluy, una noche en el circo, and two years later she accepted a supporting role in Marujas asesinas (2001), directed by Mireia Ros.
But it was social drama that finally cut through the industry's doubts about her range as an actress. In 2008 José Corbacho and Juan Cruz cast her in Cobardes, a film about school bullying in which she played Magda, the anguished mother of a teenager who is a victim of school abuse. She shot those scenes without makeup or artifice, showing a restraint in her gestures that was unprecedented for her up to that point.
That dramatic turn left critics surprised.
In 2010 television drama called her back with a character who took up more than a decade of her career: Chusa in La que se avecina. She played a foul-mouthed former drug addict who started out as a guest role for a single episode and ended up a regular at the audience's explicit request.
The role demanded considerable physical wear and boundless energy over twelve-hour shooting days. Paz Padilla understood that TV comedy in Spain works best when the actor dives in without a safety net. She stayed with the show until 2024, racking up more than fifty recorded episodes across studio sets and marathon script readings.
When the audiovisual industry became suffocating due to the routine of live shows, theater offered an artistic release. In 2018 she starred in the play Desatadas under the direction of Félix Sabroso, an ensemble comedy that brought her back into direct contact with the energy of the audience.
In 2021 she turned her grieving process after the death of her husband into a theater phenomenon with the stage adaptation of her autobiographical book, El humor de mi vida. She filled venues for months in Madrid and Barcelona, blending costumbrist comedy with reflection on loss without slipping into tearjerking melodrama.
And the box office responded flawlessly.
So the commercial film industry came back to her to headline projects aimed at mass audiences. In 2022 she co-starred in the comedy A todo tren 2: Sí, les ha pasado otra vez, directed by Inés de León, earning 6.4 million euros in Spanish theaters against the American blockbusters of that winter release season.
The following year she landed a string of roles, starting with El hotel de los líos. García y García 2 (2023), directed by Ana Murugarren, and in 2024 she appeared in La reina del convento and the comedy of errors Cuerpos locos. For the latter feature, Murugarren shot on location in Bilbao with a production budget of 2.2 million euros, funded by the ICAA and regional broadcasters.
