The Man Who Didn't Jump Into the Pool

Larry Hankin is the face everyone recognizes but almost no one can name right away. His skeletal frame and perpetually astonished gaze have kept him working on the fringes of the industry for more than six decades. He's not a leading man or a typical method actor. He's a survivor of Chicago's alternative scene who ended up sneaking into living rooms across half the planet.

In 1963, he co-founded the legendary improv company The Second City. There he learned that silence and timing matter more than the easy joke. That training helped him hold his own opposite Clint Eastwood on the set of Escape from Alcatraz in 1979. Hankin played Charley Butts, the prisoner who hangs back at the last moment out of sheer fear.

That role gave him an odd kind of visibility.

But his real strength lies in his ability to be both unsettling and funny at the same time. In 1980, he wrote, produced and starred in the short film Solly’s Diner. The piece was nominated for an Oscar and gave him entry into Hollywood screenwriting circles with a respect his acting career sometimes denied him.

The Paradox of Playing Kramer

The most surreal chapter of his career happened in 1993 during auditions for Seinfeld. Hankin read for the role of Cosmo Kramer, because the real character was based on a former neighbor of Larry David. He lost the part to Michael Richards by a very small margin.

But television is a circular place.

A few months later, he was called back to play Tom Pepper, the actor who played Kramer within the show's fiction. It was a meta-comedy exercise that only someone with his lack of interest in ego could have pulled off with such precision. On set, he stole a box of raisins during the filming of an episode, and the crew decided to write that real theft into the episode's plot.

Between 1994 and 1996, his face became ubiquitous thanks to Mr. Heckles in Friends. He was the downstairs neighbor who pounded on the ceiling with a broom and piled up absurd junk. His character's death left the show without one of its best comic foils. The character died suddenly after complaining about the noise one last time.

Scrap Metal and Deserts in Albuquerque

Many actors of his generation retired once they reached their seventies. Hankin chose to move into the universe of Vince Gilligan. In 2010, he appeared in Breaking Bad as old Joe, the junkyard owner who knew more about law and physics than the show's leads.

And he did it without breaking a sweat.

His character became a key part of Walter White's criminal logistics. Joe didn't judge; he just collected payments and applied the industrial magnet logic to destroy evidence. In 2019, he reprised the role in the movie El Camino to close out Jesse Pinkman's arc. He was one of the few original cast members who kept the same dry, practical energy from the beginning.

During the filming of Barry in 2018, he showed that his comic touch was still intact despite the years. Hankin has always preferred short roles that demand a commanding physical presence. He has appeared in more than 180 official productions across film and television since he began working professionally.

In 2023, he stayed active posting content to his personal YouTube channel, where he experiments with editing and absurd humor. He lives simply in a house full of his own paintings and sketches of scripts he never got to shoot. His profile with the actors' union lists a height of six feet, three inches.
