Synopsis of All in the Family

In Queens, New York, the Bunker family lives in a working-class neighborhood home. Archie, a World War II veteran, is a closed-minded man who distrusts anyone who doesn't think like him or fit his idea of how people should be. His wife, Edith, is sweet and understanding, though at times she seems naive. Together they have a daughter, Gloria, who has inherited her father's stubbornness and calls herself a feminist. Gloria is married to Michael Stivic, a student whose ideas come from the counterculture of the 1960s, and whom Archie calls "Meathead." The arguments between father-in-law and son-in-law, in a house where they all live together, drive the series. Created by Norman Lear and Johnny Speight, it airs on CBS and stars Carroll O'Connor as Archie.

Trivia about All in the Family

After watching the pilot, ABC asked for a second pilot because it was unhappy with the two actors, and Lear ended up recasting the roles of Gloria and Dickie with Struthers and Reiner.
All in the Family was the first television series to top the Nielsen ratings for five consecutive years, from 1971 to 1976.
Jean Stapleton sang the theme song with a deliberately slightly off-key note, which drew laughter from the studio audience. Over the seasons, that note turned into an increasingly exaggerated screech.
The house that appears in the opening credits, the Bunkers' home in Astoria, is actually located at 89-70 Cooper Avenue, in the Glendale neighborhood.
A longer version of the theme song was released as a single on Atlantic Records and reached No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1972.
The series won four consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, between 1971 and 1974, and it was the first sitcom in which all four lead actors won Emmys for their performances.
After Jean Stapleton left, the show continued as "Archie Bunker's Place," which premiered in the fall of 1979 and ran for four seasons until 1983.
The success of "All in the Family" led to several spin-offs, including "Maude," "Good Times" and "The Jeffersons," which expanded Norman Lear's television universe.
