Synopsis of The Nanny

Fran Fine is a young Jewish American woman from Queens, New York. Her boyfriend, who was also her boss at a bridal shop, dumps her and fires her. Out of work, Fran goes door to door selling cosmetics to make a living, until she knocks on the door of Maxwell Sheffield, a widowed British theater producer who lives in New York with his three children. Through a misunderstanding, she is mistaken for the nanny they were expecting for the weekend. Maxwell, unconvinced, agrees to hire her on a trial basis to look after Maggie, Brighton and Grace. While the butler Niles watches the newcomer's every move, Fran discovers that her personality can bring warmth back to a family that has lost it.

Trivia about The Nanny

The idea came up during a shopping trip in London and was conceived as a twist on The Sound of Music, with Fran knocking on the door instead of Julie Andrews.
Sagansky watched a few episodes with his relatives in Fort Lauderdale, sensed that he had a hit on his hands, and ordered a first season of 22 episodes.
After a violent break-in at his home in 1985, Fran Drescher asked that the studio audience be pre-selected, and the series hired a group of laugh track performers through Central Casting.
The series had a weak first year and came close to being canceled, until CBS executive Jeff Sagansky defended it by citing the historic test results of the pilot.
The show won a Rose d'Or and an Emmy Award, out of a total of twelve nominations.
Lauren Lane told the producers that she was pregnant during the fifth season, and the pregnancy happened while the series was returning from its summer break to film new episodes.
CBS canceled the series in 1999 after its ratings fell during the sixth season, which ended after six years on the air.
Fran Drescher said that a possible reunion for the 30th anniversary could turn into a backdoor pilot, though he also noted that several options were still on the table.
