Benjamin Salisbury spent almost twenty years writing music for the BBC's natural history unit. He wasn't chasing fame in commercial film. His work consisted of providing sound backgrounds for prestigious documentaries such as Life of Mammals in 2002 or Life in the Undergrowth in 2005. He was a British television professional who understood the rhythm of nature before the suspense of Hollywood.
And then Geoff Barrow showed up.
His connection with the Portishead founder in 2012 changed his technical path. Together they released DROKK, an album inspired by the Judge Dredd universe that worked as an electronic statement of intent. That industrial, minimalist sound caught the attention of Alex Garland. The director was looking for something that didn't sound like the usual string orchestra for his directing debut.
In 2014, they composed the score for Ex Machina. The budget was tight, but the creative chemistry was total. They used analog synthesizers and processed organic textures to create an atmosphere of technological claustrophobia. They won the Ivor Novello Award for this work and laid the foundations for one of the most enduring collaborations in film today.
But Salisbury doesn't limit himself to pure electronics. Before entering the studio, he usually analyzes the narrative structure as if he were one more screenwriter.
Salisbury almost never works alone. His partnership with Barrow extended to Annihilation in 2018, where they mixed acoustic guitars with extreme digital distortion. Because Salisbury's goal is always to unsettle the audience through sound frequency. On the series Devs in 2020, they pushed this experimentation to the limit, using human choirs processed to an almost unrecognizable degree.
Sometimes silence is his best tool.
For Civil War in 2024, the approach shifted toward an almost documentary rawness. They avoided the traditional war melodrama. They preferred distorted country pieces and abrupt cuts that left the audience breathless. So the sound of war became dry and unheroic.
In 2024, he also worked on the adaptation of The Life of Chuck under the direction of Mike Flanagan. Salisbury keeps his studio in Bristol, equipped with modular synthesizers that he often modifies himself.
He uses a layered recording technique that sometimes involves destroying the original sound in order to rebuild it from scratch. For the series Black Mirror, on the episode Men Against Fire in 2016, he applied this philosophy of sonic degradation. Salisbury prefers technical errors to digital perfection because they add a human texture that software can't imitate.
The percussion recording for Men in 2022 was done in an empty church to take advantage of the room's natural echo. Salisbury has used a specialized editing software called Logic Pro since the late nineties. The sound team for Civil War needed more than six months of post-production to balance the dialogue with its industrial atmospheres.
