Rachel Roberts didn't come to Hollywood looking for a supporting role in a romantic comedy. Her debut was a digital experiment that fooled half the world in 2002. The Canadian model lent her body and features to bring to life an actress who didn't exist in Andrew Niccol's fiction. The director wanted a beauty so symmetrical that it would seem suspicious to the human eye.
And the gamble paid off.
But behind the pixels was a woman who already knew what it meant to walk for the great fashion houses in Paris. Before shooting her first film, Roberts was already dominating the covers of the most influential fashion magazines. Her initial anonymity in film was an aggressive marketing strategy. No one was supposed to know Simone was a real person until the film hit theaters.
The industry took a while to accept that Roberts was flesh and blood. That stigma of artificial perfection followed her through her next steps in front of the camera. Because in Los Angeles, if you start out as a visual effect, it's hard to be taken seriously for a period drama.
In 2011 she worked with Niccol again on In Time. There she played the mother of Justin Timberlake in a world where no one ages past twenty-five. The choice was a casting win thanks to her timeless look. Her face fit perfectly into that aesthetic nightmare where youth is the only currency allowed.
But her career didn't stop on screen.
She balanced her film appearances with roles in TV series such as Mad Men and Castle. In these productions she sought to move away from the coldness of science fiction and explore more everyday registers. Even so, the fantasy genre always came calling again thanks to her ability to convey an unsettling serenity.
In 2013, she appeared in The Host, another adaptation of a bestselling novel where identity once again sat at the heart of the story. Roberts seems at ease with stories that question what makes us human. So her involvement in projects like this was never a coincidence but a conscious choice of scripts with philosophical weight.
In 2018 she shot Anon for Netflix. In this film she played Alysa in a future where privacy is dead because everything we see is recorded in a database. It was one of her last notable appearances before focusing her efforts on production and managing her own public image.
And the system changed for her.
Starting in 2020, Roberts limited her appearances in major productions to choose projects with less media exposure. She focused on developing independent content where creative control didn't depend exclusively on the major studios. Over 2023, she took part in artistic photography campaigns that reaffirmed her status as one of the most recognizable figures of 1990s style.
In 2024, the actress kept a low profile, staying away from the spotlight of international red carpets. Her earnings from image rights on video-on-demand platforms remain a mystery to the financial press. The exact figure of her original contract for S1m0ne has never been made public. Filming for her next professional collaboration was scheduled for late 2025 on locations in New Zealand.
