Peter Krause is not your typical actor chasing fame through cereal commercials in Los Angeles. He studied English literature in Minnesota before moving to New York to train at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts. There, he learned that acting was a physical, technical craft rather than an exercise in vanity.
In 1990, he landed his first professional role in a sketch series titled Carol & Company.
It was a modest but necessary start. During those early years in the industry, he appeared in one-off episodes of popular sitcoms such as Seinfeld and Cybill. He learned to find his way around television sets while waiting for an opportunity to play a character with greater psychological depth.
The industry noticed his command when he accepted the role of Casey McCall in Sports Night. That 1998 series demanded a verbal speed that few actors could sustain without choking. Krause handled Sorkin's dialogue with a natural ease that left his own castmates in awe of his diction's precision.
But ABC never knew what to do with such a smart, cynical show.
The series was canceled after two short seasons. Despite its low ratings, critics already regarded him as one of the most solid faces on American television. That reputation opened the door to the project that would define his professional maturity.
Alan Ball handed him the script for Six Feet Under in 2001. Playing Nate Fisher forced him to explore grief and male frustration over five years of nonstop filming. It was a production that redefined TV drama on cable at the start of the century.
He received three consecutive Emmy Award nominations for this role.
Krause always avoided the usual leading-man mannerisms to focus on the neurosis of a man who ran a funeral home while running from his own fate. The emotional demands of the shoot were exhausting. Yet the actor kept his technical composure even in the darkest scenes of the plot.
After HBO's funeral home series ended in 2005, the actor sought projects that would let him explore other styles. In 2006, he starred in the cult miniseries The Lost Room, and a year later he led the cast of Dirty Sexy Money. None of these projects matched the longevity of his earlier work.
And the bet on family drama paid off once again.
In 2010, he joined the cast of Parenthood to bring Adam Braverman to life. For six seasons, he played the level-headed center of a chaotic family in California. Filming at Universal Studios deepened his personal bond with Lauren Graham, with whom he shared his private life until 2021.
In 2018, he signed a contract to star in 9-1-1, produced by Ryan Murphy. He plays Captain Bobby Nash in an action drama that moves away from the introspection of his early work to embrace pure spectacle. The series reached one hundred produced episodes in 2024 after moving networks to ABC.
Krause now manages his career with complete calm.
His public appearances outside of mandatory promotions are nonexistent. The actor's current contract includes executive producer clauses that ensure he keeps control over the final product. Syndication rights to his earlier work continue to generate steady annual income for his management company.
