Charlie Babbitt, a heartless young man, expects to inherit a considerable fortune after the death of his father, from whom he was estranged. However, someone Charlie has never taken into account at all, his older brother Raymond, who is confined to a medical institution, receives the entire fortune in the will. Raymond is autistic with limited mental capacity in some respects, but with the gifts of a genius in others.
