Oskar Schell is a nine-year-old boy who lives in New York with his parents, Linda and Thomas. He is very intelligent, but he struggles to connect with others, something his father keeps firmly in mind. To help him, Thomas gives him missions that force him to go out into the street, observe his surroundings, and communicate with other people. The first one is to find the so-called "Sixth Borough" of the city, a puzzle Thomas presents to his son as a game. Oskar takes the assignment very seriously, and each outing confronts him with places, people, and situations he cannot control. His orderly world starts to collide with a reality that doesn't fit his rules, and the boy will have to decide how to face it.
