Valeria Golino (born in Naples, 1965) remains one of the most versatile and respected figures in international cinema. With a career that has skillfully moved between European art-house films and major Hollywood productions, the Italian actress and director has built a reputation that transcends borders. Her intense gaze and distinctive husky voice have made her an unmistakable icon of elegance and acting talent.
Discovered by filmmaker Lina Wertmüller, Golino quickly made a name for herself on the festival circuit. Her early breakthrough came with the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival for Storia d'amore (1986), an award she would win again decades later for Per amor vostro (2015), making her one of the few actresses to earn this double honor.
Her move to the United States in the late 80s put her on the global map. She is remembered for her role in the Oscar-winning Rain Man (1988), alongside Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, and for her comedic turn in the Hot Shots! franchise. However, rather than being typecast in the American industry, Valeria has always kept a strong foothold in Europe, working with acclaimed directors such as Gabriele Salvatores and Giuseppe Tornatore or, more recently, in major French productions like Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), by Céline Sciamma.
In her artistic maturity, Golino has proven to be a filmmaker of exceptional sensitivity. Her feature directing debut with Miele (2013) was acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival, tackling the subject of euthanasia with great delicacy. She later followed with Euforia (2018), reaffirming her ability to dissect human relationships and male vulnerability, and establishing herself as one of the most compelling narrative voices in contemporary Italian cinema.
Her most ambitious project as a director to date has been the television adaptation of The Art of Joy (L'arte della gioia), the posthumous novel by Goliarda Sapienza. The production marked a milestone in her career, allowing her to explore, through an episodic format, the life of a free and transgressive woman in twentieth-century Sicily, a story that resonates with Golino's own independent spirit.
In recent years, Valeria Golino has enjoyed a revival in prestige television. Her role in the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, playing Paola Lambruschini, brought her renewed visibility in the English-speaking market and added a European sophistication to the storyline. She also appeared in My Brilliant Friend, based on Elena Ferrante's novel for Netflix, where critics praised her raw performance as Vittoria.
Among her most recent big-screen work is her role in Maria, Pablo Larraín's biopic about Maria Callas, where she shares the cast with Angelina Jolie as Yakinthi Callas, the soprano's sister. The project underscores her status as a standout supporting actress in globally recognized auteur productions. She also continues to balance acting with developing new scripts, always staying committed to stories that challenge social and artistic conventions.
