Forging an Animal of the Stage

Gérard Depardieu was born in Châteauroux in 1948 into a family where silence was the rule. His father could barely read, and poverty set the daily rhythm of the household. The young Gérard spent his teenage years on the streets, dealing with American soldiers and stealing gasoline. He didn't seem like the type of actor destined for posterity.

At sixteen he arrived in Paris almost by accident, following a friend. He enrolled in Jean-Laurent Cochet's acting class, where he discovered that his stutter disappeared when he recited classic texts. His build was rough and his nose too big for the standards of the time. But his physical presence was so overwhelming that directors couldn't take their eyes off him.

In 1974 he starred in Les Valseuses under the direction of Bertrand Blier. That film launched him to European stardom with the role of a sexually liberated delinquent who scandalized the French bourgeoisie. Depardieu didn't need to fake roughness because he had it built in. That success allowed him to choose projects that blended art-house cinema with big commercial productions.

French cinema found its ogre.

The Box Office Assault

He worked with the country's top directors throughout the 1980s. In 1980 he won his first César for Le Dernier Métro under the direction of François Truffaut. His chemistry with Catherine Deneuve was so obvious that they reunited on several occasions. Depardieu showed he could be tender and violent in the same scene without missing a beat.

His definitive breakthrough came in 1990 with Cyrano de Bergerac. His portrayal of the big-nosed poet earned him an Oscar nomination and the Best Actor award at Cannes. It was the moment Hollywood came knocking. He starred in Green Card that same year and won a Golden Globe for a romantic comedy that grossed 29 million dollars in the United States alone.

But the actor never felt at home in the American studio system. He preferred to shoot in Europe, where he could control the schedule and the bottles of wine that were opened on set. So he returned to France to keep piling up film credits and acres of vineyards in the Anjou region. His fortune grew at the same pace as his waistline.

Depardieu was always a body on the run.

The Fall and Refuge in the East

In 2013, the actor made a decision that fractured his relationship with the French public. He applied for Russian citizenship to avoid taxes in his home country. Vladimir Putin personally handed him the passport in Sochi. That gesture was seen as a betrayal by much of the critics and his fellow professionals. Controversies began to devour his acting talent.

The industry began to take notice of him.

Despite the political scandals, he kept working tirelessly. In 2022, he starred in Maigret under the direction of Patrice Leconte, giving the inspector a twilight melancholy. It was one of his last major performances before the legal shadows closed in on him. His name began to appear more in court sections than in movie listings.

In 2020, French authorities charged him with sexual assault following a complaint from actress Charlotte Arnould. Other women later came forward with testimony describing a pattern of abusive behavior on film sets. The French audiovisual industry turned its back on him officially after decades of consented impunity.

In 2024, the trial for these charges was set for October in the Paris court.
