Sylvette Herry didn't choose her stage name. Coluche gave it to her because he said she was small and soft like a cat. Miou-Miou was born at the Café de la Gare, that haven of French bohemia in the late sixties where people shouted more than they acted.
In 1974, she shot Les Valseuses under Bertrand Blier's direction. That film was a punch in the gut to the French bourgeoisie. Audiences saw a woman who didn't ask permission to be free, and its success was as massive as it was controversial.
And French cinema changed its face.
Miou-Miou never wanted to be a diva. She hated red carpets and the industry's pomp. In 1980, she won the César for Best Actress for La Dérobade, in which she played a prostitute. She didn't even go to pick up the award because she considered competition in art to be nonsense.
Throughout the 1980s, her presence became indispensable to directors seeking authenticity. In 1986, she starred in Tenue de soirée, a dark comedy that challenged the sexual labels of the era. She worked with Michel Deville on La Lectrice in 1988 and refined a restrained performance style that became her signature.
But her biggest physical challenge came in 1993 with Germinal. Claude Berri put her in coal mines to play La Maheude. It was an exhausting shoot where the mud and cold were real. The film cost 160 million francs and became one of the most expensive productions in French history up to that point.
So the public grew used to her tired, natural face.
In 2004, she appeared in Mariages! to show that commercial comedy was not foreign to her. For years she alternated theater with weighty supporting roles in art-house films. She didn't care about the size of the role, but who was behind the camera.
Because prestige doesn't pay the bills.
In 2021, she joined the cast of The Last Mercenary alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme. It was a strange foray into action cinema for digital platforms. Two years later, in 2023, she premiered Je verrai toujours vos visages, directed by her own daughter, Jeanne Herry.
In this drama about restorative justice, she plays Sabine, a woman who seeks to understand trauma through words. The film received nine César nominations in 2024. The final budget for this French production was 7.8 million euros.
