Michèle Cortès de Fabiant arrived in Paris in 1952 with a piano under her arm and a determination that intimidated the professors at the Conservatory. She was not chasing the quick fame of the starlettes of the era. She preferred to study Molière's texts in depth while French cinema still insisted on looking for substitutes for Brigitte Bardot.

And then Jacques Becker appeared.

The director of Casque d'Or was not only her first husband but also the one who taught her that filmmaking was a craft of Swiss precision. After his death in 1960, Fabian spent a while in the shadows, playing supporting roles that did not make the most of her gift for rapid-fire dialogue. But her luck changed when a young Eric Rohmer saw her walking across a set.

Rohmer was looking for a woman who could hold a theological conversation through an entire snowy night in Clermont-Ferrand. In 1969, the premiere of Ma nuit chez Maud put her in a place where intelligence was valued more than looks. The film brought in millions of francs and made her the official face of the late French New Wave.

Her performance as Maud was no stroke of luck. Fabian brought a dry, almost clipped style that fascinated Luis Buñuel for Belle de Jour in 1967, where she played Charlotte. On set, the Aragonese director reportedly gave her hardly any direction, because she already came in with the character fully built.

Conquering Maturity

Many actors fade away after turning forty, but she found her best version in 1973 with La Bonne Année by Claude Lelouch. In this film, she plays an art gallery owner who falls in love with a gentleman thief. The chemistry was so real that she won the Best Actress award at the San Sebastián Film Festival in 1973.

It was a matter of a glance.

During the eighties and nineties her activity did not slow down, although the kind of cinema shifted toward more commercial productions. She worked with directors such as Manoel de Oliveira and Nelly Kaplan. Yet she always kept a cautious distance from the Parisian film industry, preferring theater whenever the screenplays on offer struck her as mediocre.

She married Marcel Bozzuffi in 1963, and they formed one of the most stable couples in the industry until the actor's death in 1988. That loss pulled her away from the spotlight for a short time. Because Françoise Fabian always returns to work as a form of personal survival.

New Roles and No Retirement in Sight

In 2018, she decided it was never too late to start a music career. She recorded a self-titled album with songs written by Alex Beaupain, where her deep voice recalled the great ladies of the chanson. The album sold thousands of copies and took her on tour through venues across half of Europe when she was already over eighty years old.

Filmmaker Michel Gondry called her in 2023 to take part in The Book of Solutions. In the film, she plays the protagonist's aunt, proving that her comedic flair was intact after decades of intense dramas. Filming took place mainly in the Occitanie region during the summer.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2021, she starred in Rose by Aurélie Saada, playing a seventy-eight-year-old widow who decides to start living again. The production had a budget of four million euros and was shot in just six weeks.

Françoise Fabian now lives in an apartment in Paris, surrounded by books and memories of film shoots that are now part of cinema history. She has no intention of writing a definitive memoir. She prefers that her trail fade away among the shadows of the Cinémathèque Française archives.

The technical credits for her latest film list eighteen costume changes designed by French haute couture houses.
