Lino Ventura never wanted to be an actor. In 1953, he was a professional wrestler with a badly damaged knee, looking for a decent way to make a living. Jacques Becker needed a tough-looking guy for Touchez pas au grisbi and found a man who couldn't lie in front of the camera.
Ventura asked for an astronomical fee, expecting the director to turn him down. But Becker accepted. That was how a career built on silence and a physical presence that filled the frame, without needing to deliver grand speeches, began.
His school was the ring.
He never studied acting or read books on dramatic art. His technique consisted of standing in front of the spotlight and simply being himself, with an intensity that intimidated his co-stars. In that first film, he shared the frame with Jean Gabin, and the veteran actor immediately knew that this Italian would stay in the profession for a long time.
During the 1960s, he became an indispensable face of European crime cinema. He worked with Jean-Pierre Melville on Le Deuxième Souffle and in the grueling L’Armée des ombres from 1969. His role as Philippe Gerbier is the definitive portrait of the French Resistance because there is no trace of forced heroism.
There is only one sense of duty, and it is suffocating.
Despite being France's most beloved actor, Ventura kept his Italian passport until the end of his days. He refused to become a French citizen out of respect for his parents and his roots in Parma. This decision caused him some bureaucratic problems, but his word was worth more than any political or administrative convenience.
He applied that same integrity to the scripts that landed on his desk. If a character didn't fit his moral code, Ventura turned down the role no matter how many zeros were on the check. For him, cinema was a job for honest men who should never betray the public.
His greatest achievement had nothing to do with red carpets or industry awards. In 1965, he founded the Perce-Neige association after making a public appeal on television to help children with intellectual disabilities. The initiative grew out of his private reality as the father of a daughter with special needs.
Discretion was his absolute rule.
He devoted much of his personal fortune to funding specialized residences and support centers throughout French territory. He would not allow the press to use his charity work to promote his film releases. In 1987, he shot his final scenes before suffering a sudden heart attack at his home in Saint-Cloud.
His filmography includes 75 feature films and cumulative box office earnings that place him among the three most bankable actors in twentieth-century European cinema.
