Micheline Presle made her first film at just fifteen years old. She was 1937 when she appeared in La Fessée and took the surname of her first major character to hide her real identity. That quick decision defined a career spanning more than eight decades in front of the camera.
It was a matter of instinct.
In 1947, the release of Le Diable au corps shook the morals of postwar France. This love story between a married woman and a teenager outraged the most conservative sectors of Parisian society. The film broke box office records while critics were split between applause and horror at the raw nature of the story.
And the scandal launched her to worldwide stardom.
Hollywood came knocking at the end of the 1940s. Presle signed with 20th Century-Fox and moved to the United States hoping to repeat the success of her compatriots in the movie capital. But the American film industry didn't quite know what to do with her European magnetism.
She shot Under My Skin in 1950 alongside John Garfield in an attempt by the studio to create a new foreign star. It was a dull project that didn't make use of her acting talent or her physical presence. As a result, the American experience became a stretch of professional frustration that brought her back to France sooner than expected.
There was no turning back.
After returning to France, she worked with the directors who were reinventing the visual language of the continent. Jacques Demy cast her in Peau d'Âne in 1970, and Alain Resnais featured her in I Want to Go Home during 1989. The size of the role never mattered to her as long as the script had something to say about the human condition.
Because Presle saw filmmaking as a craft of pure endurance. In 1994 she took part in the version of Les Misérables directed by Claude Lelouch, bringing a dramatic weight that only the years can give. Her ability to stay active well past the age of eighty amazed an industry that tends to forget its veteran actresses.
In 1999, she worked under her daughter Tonie Marshall in Vénus Beauté (Institut). That collaboration did very well at the French box office and helped her connect with a much younger audience. But she preferred to keep seeking challenges in low-budget independent productions.
In 2014, she filmed her last big-screen appearance in Tu veux ou tu veux pas. She spent her final years in retirement at the Maison des artistes in Nogent-sur-Marne, away from the media spotlight. Micheline Presle died on February 21, 2024, at the age of 101.
