Carlos Estévez didn't want to be Martin Sheen. He changed his stage name before turning twenty because in Hollywood, Hispanic surnames closed too many doors during the 1980s. His father was already an established legend by then, but the son wanted a identity of his own, away from the shadow of Apocalypse Now.
In 1984 he made his film debut in Red Dawn. It was a teen action movie that served as a showcase for a generation of actors eager to conquer the world. It didn't take long for major directors to notice his cynical gaze and chiseled jaw.
In 1986 he shot Platoon under Oliver Stone's direction. It was a punishing physical experience in the jungles of the Philippines that wiped away his clean-cut image in one stroke. The industry saw in him the new face of serious war cinema, and critics began to take him seriously.
He reunited with Stone in 1987 to film Wall Street. He played Bud Fox and held his own in the dialogue scenes opposite a Michael Douglas who was at the peak of his powers. It was the exact point where his asking price skyrocketed for good.
And the gamble paid off.
In the early nineties, he decided that drama was weighing too heavily on his career. He starred in Hot Shots! in 1991 and discovered that audiences preferred seeing him in absurd parodies rather than suffering in the trenches. That changed his career forever.
Replacing Michael J. Fox on the series Spin City in 2000 was his masterstroke. Hardly anyone trusted a movie actor jumping to broadcast television at the time, but he won a Golden Globe for that work. The small screen offered him financial stability that movies were starting to deny him.
In 2003 he signed the contract of his career to star in Two and a Half Men. The series became a ratings phenomenon that devoured everything in its path on CBS nights. Sheen played an exaggerated version of himself and earned $1.8 million per episode.
But the spark had died out from within.
The public meltdown of 2011 was far from quiet. He insulted the producers of his own series and demanded impossible pay raises while his personal life fell apart live on the internet. Warner Bros. fired him abruptly that March after months of erratic behavior.
He tried to reclaim his lost throne with the series Anger Management in 2012. The contract included a clause guaranteeing 100 episodes if certain ratings targets were met in the first few weeks. He managed to shoot every episode, but its cultural impact was far smaller than in his heyday.
In November 2015, he revealed on television that he had been HIV-positive for four years. That interview on Today was a desperate attempt to stop the blackmail he was suffering from former acquaintances. The actor admitted to having paid millions to keep his health status secret.
He spent several years away from the spotlight, focused on his personal recovery.
In 2023 he returned to work in the series Bookie under Chuck Lorre's direction. It was a much-discussed public reconciliation after a decade of lawsuits, insults and verbal attacks in the media. The deal was struck on strictly professional terms for a supporting role meant to clean up his image.
By 2024, a court dismissed several of the cross-claims he had filed against his ex-wife over unpaid alimony. His net worth is currently estimated at less than $10 million, after having managed a fortune of more than $150 million.
