Alba Rohrwacher never wanted to be an actress. She was studying medicine in Florence when she decided that dissecting cadavers wasn't for her, and she moved to Rome. She got into the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia almost by accident.
And Italian cinema changed its face.
In 2002, she made her debut with a tiny role in L'ora di religione. It wasn't a media explosion of red carpets and blinding flashbulbs. It was more of a steady trickle of characters who always seemed on the verge of physical or emotional collapse.
Her look breaks the mold of the traditional Mediterranean star. She is pale and slender, with a gaze that seems to cut through the screen effortlessly. In 2008, she won her first David di Donatello for Giorni e nuvole. But it was a year later that her role in Il papà di Giovanna placed her in a league of her own.
In 2009, she became the youngest actress to win two David di Donatello awards in a row.
That Best Actress award confirmed that her presence was magnetic.
She often works with her sister, director Alice Rohrwacher. In 2014, they shot Le meraviglie together, and in 2018 they reunited for Lazzaro felice. Their professional bond works because they share a vision of the rural and mystical world that stands apart from Milan's commercial circuits.
In 2014, she won the Volpi Cup in Venice for Hungry Hearts. She played a mother obsessed with the purity of her son's food in a New York apartment. She shot nearly the entire film in confined, suffocating spaces that left viewers feeling nauseous.
Nine days of shooting were all it took to complete her most intense scenes in that apartment.
She speaks several languages, which lets her move from Italy to France or the United States without her accent being a barrier. In 2021, she appeared in The Lost Daughter under the direction of Maggie Gyllenhaal. But her real strength lies in European auteur cinema, where silence matters more than dialogue.
In 2023, she starred in Hors-saison alongside Guillaume Canet. The story is set in a deserted spa resort during winter and relies entirely on the icy chemistry between the two actors. Because Alba Rohrwacher has mastered the art of saying nothing while conveying everything with his shoulders.
The industry turns to her for projects that call for an unusual sensitivity.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Maria, the biopic about Maria Callas directed by Pablo Larraín. She shares the screen with Angelina Jolie in a production that explores the diva's final days in Paris. Also in 2024, she worked on La voce under Marco Bellocchio, returning to her purist roots.
Her schedule for 2025 includes collaborations with directors who steer clear of the big studio circuit. Rohrwacher prefers small shoots where the script is discussed at the kitchen table before filming begins. She still lives far from the noise of social media and mass promotions.
In 2025, she will shoot in the Swiss Alps with a crew of fewer than twenty people.
