Lars Eidinger strips down on stage, and it's not a metaphor. At Berlin's Schaubühne theater, the actor's body is a shock tool. He has been working there since 1999 and has turned provocation into a studied technique.
He was born in West Berlin in 1976. His training at the prestigious Ernst Busch academy gave him the technical foundation to withstand the pressure of live performance. But his real education came under Thomas Ostermeier.
The director made him his go-to actor. Together they reinvented classics such as Hamlet and Richard III. In these productions, Eidinger interacted with the audience and violently broke the fourth wall.
Eidinger doesn't play characters.
He inhabits his roles in a physical way that can be uncomfortable for the viewer. That intensity is exactly what caught the attention of casting directors outside Germany.
Cinema took a while to understand his magnetism. It was in 2009 that Maren Ade's film Everyone Else put him on the international map. He played an insecure man on a vacation in Sardinia.
He won awards and caught the attention of the European industry. From then on, his face became a regular presence in productions looking for something more than a clean-cut look.
In 2014, Olivier Assayas cast him in Clouds of Sils Maria. He reunited with the French director in 2016 for Personal Shopper. In both films he shared the screen with Kristen Stewart and stole scenes with a surprisingly economical use of gesture.
Eidinger has a physical presence that can be intimidating.
In 2022, he appeared in Noise of Things by Noah Baumbach. It was his entry into big-budget American cinema with an independent spirit. He played an eccentric pharmacist in a complex adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel.
His salary for this production topped six figures for just a few weeks of filming in Ohio.
He isn't interested in predictable career paths. He balances international film shoots with DJ sets in Berlin under the name Autistic Disco. It's a way to stay connected to the reality of Berlin's nightlife and escape the film bubble.
In 2024, he starred in Sterben directed by Matthias Glasner. The film explores the breakdown of a German family over three hours of runtime. It is a raw work that demanded absolute emotional commitment from him.
That same year, he appeared in Limonov: The Ballad by Kirill Serebrennikov. He played a key supporting role in this biopic of the radical Russian writer, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The theater remains his absolute priority.
For him, the camera is just a witness to what he has already rehearsed a thousand times on stage. In 2024, his contract with the Schaubühne was automatically renewed for another full season.
Performances of Hamlet in Berlin often sell out months in advance. In 2024, the price of the most expensive ticket to see him live reached 85 euros at the official box office.
