Nina Hoss was born in Stuttgart in 1975, into a family with one foot in politics and the other on the stage. Her father was a co-founder of The Greens, and her mother directed the Württembergisches Staatstheater. That legacy of commitment and discipline shaped her entry into acting from her teenage years.
In 1996 she starred in A Girl Called Rosemary, directed by Bernd Eichinger. It was a ratings hit on German television that brought her instant fame before she finished her studies at the Ernst Busch school. But she chose to retreat to Berlin's national theater for years to refine a technique that shuns excess.
The actress doesn't chase easy applause.
Her theater training gave her absolute control over her body language. On the stage of the Deutsches Theater she learned that stillness communicates more than a scream. For Hoss, cinema is a matter of layers that are peeled away gradually in front of the camera.
In 2001, she began a collaboration with director Christian Petzold that defined the aesthetics of contemporary German cinema. Together they made Something to Remind Me and built a professional relationship grounded in restraint. The director found in her the perfect gaze for portraying the coldness of a unified Germany.
In 2007 she won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale for her role in Yella. She played a woman fleeing her past in East Germany only to fall into the clutches of the West's most ruthless capitalism. European critics began comparing her to the great ladies of classic cinema for her ability to hold long takes without blinking.
German cinema owes her its most frosty face.
In 2012 she shot Barbara, and in 2014 Phoenix. In the latter film, Hoss plays a Holocaust survivor who undergoes facial reconstruction to reclaim her identity. The ending of that film is considered one of the most powerful moments in European cinema of the past decade, thanks to its use of silence and song.
The American industry came knocking through television. In 2014 she joined the series Homeland as Astrid, a German intelligence agent. It was a logical transition that let her work on bigger-budget productions without giving up her restrained style.
In 2022 she played Sharon Goodnow in Tár, directed by Todd Field. Her role as the protagonist's wife and first violinist earned her recognition from U.S. film critics' associations. She did so by sharing the screen with Cate Blanchett in an acting duel built on what goes unsaid.
Hoss doesn't need long dialogue to dominate a scene.
In 2023 she took part in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, the posthumous work of William Friedkin, playing Commander Katherine Challee. That same year she joined the espionage series The Diplomat for a global streaming platform. In 2024, Claire Burger's Langue Étrangère competed in the official section of the Berlinale with her in the lead cast.
The production of Langue Étrangère had an approximate budget of €4.8 million.
