Reni Santoni was born in New York City in 1938. His parents had French and Spanish roots, which gave him the Mediterranean look that casting directors in the sixties found so useful. He started out in Off-Broadway theater, writing his own sketches before Carl Reiner noticed him.
Reiner gave him the lead role in Enter Laughing in 1967.
It was a risky bet, since Santoni had no previous experience in front of the camera. But the gamble paid off, and audiences connected with his mix of shyness and nervous energy. The actor was not after the fame of magazine covers and preferred the hands-on work on New York stages.
In 1971, the project came along that fixed his image in the mind of the average viewer. Don Siegel was looking for a counterpoint to Dirty Harry and chose Santoni to play Inspector Chico González. Sharing the screen with Clint Eastwood was not easy for an actor used to the stage. Chico González represented modernity in contrast to Harry's blunt methods, and his tragic fate in the story set the film's dry tone.
And that is how he became part of the collective imagination.
Throughout the eighties, his presence was constant on television series and action productions such as Cobra in 1986. He worked alongside Sylvester Stallone, playing the efficient partner role he had already perfected years earlier. But the mainstream audience of the nineties recognized him for something much more down-to-earth.
He first appeared on Seinfeld in 1994.
He played Poppie, the owner of an Italian restaurant with questionable hygiene. The character became a recurring device for the show's writers because of his knack for creating awkward situations. Santoni handled the comedic rhythm with surgical precision that often overshadowed the leads. His talent for being irritating allowed him to stretch the character across several seasons without wearing out the joke.
Because he understood that the secret of a good supporting actor is not trying to be the center of attention. Before filming, he would read the script looking for the gaps where his character could add some real human touch. He took part in various productions such as Doctor Dolittle in 1998, lending his voice to a rat, showing that the format didn't matter to him as long as the project was fun.
In 2012, he did his last credited work on the series Franklin & Bash. By then he was already dealing with serious health problems that kept him permanently off the sets in Los Angeles. He retired from public life without major statements or farewell tours.
Reni Santoni died in August 2020 at the age of 81.
He died in a palliative care center after suffering complications from cancer and several bouts of pneumonia. The medical report confirmed that death was due to natural causes within a few hours of his admission.
