Brad Garrett stands 6 feet 7 inches tall. That height shaped how he approached the stage from the time he started in California comedy clubs in the early eighties. In 1984, he became the first comedian to win $100,000 on Star Search. That money let him stop sleeping in his car and open for acts like Frank Sinatra or Liza Minnelli in Las Vegas.
His voice is a thunder that rumbles through the back rows of theaters. But his career didn't take off because of his physique; it was his ability to project an almost childlike vulnerability despite his imposing size. In 1996, he accepted the role of Robert Barone in the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. There, he played the envious, brooding brother of Ray Romano for nine seasons.
He won three Emmy Awards for that work.
And he did it while waging a quiet battle over cast salaries. In 2003, he led an internal strike that halted production of the series to demand that rerun residuals also go to supporting actors. He got CBS to give in to his demands. That union victory changed the pay structure in the television industry of the time.
When the series ended in 2005, the actor tried to go solo with 'Til Death. The sitcom ran for four seasons but never matched the impact of his earlier hit. It was a transitional period in which the performer retreated into recording booths. His vocal range allowed him to bring characters to life in Finding Nemo and Ratatouille. Animation studios valued his ability to sound both threatening and tender in the same sentence.
In 2012, he opened his own comedy club at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas.
Still, auteur cinema was always his unfinished business until darker projects came along. In 2023, he took part in the series High Desert alongside Patricia Arquette. There he played a down-on-his-luck private investigator trying to make sense of the chaos around an addict. Critics praised his restraint. In 2024, he shot the movie Unfrosted under the direction of Jerry Seinfeld for Netflix.
Filming The Last Showgirl in 2025 marked a return to his roots in casino entertainment. In this film directed by Gia Coppola, he shares the bill with Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis. The story is set at the twilight of variety shows in Nevada. Garrett plays a manager who watches his world disappear as big hotels tear down classic theaters to build sports stadiums.
He's someone who knows the backstage world well.
Off camera, he maintains a rigid business structure. His comedy club operates under a lease that he renewed for ten years in 2021. The net proceeds from his live performances go largely to his Maximum Hope foundation. The organization provides direct aid to families with children suffering from terminal illnesses. The foundation's operating budget exceeded $2 million in its fiscal year 2024.
